7 Screen-Free Activities That Can Help with Child Development

These activities can help with a child’s development and stimulate their minds while promoting health, social skills, and emotional well-being.

It’s only natural for us parents to want to provide our children with the best opportunities in life. While education and discipline are important, on top of building a connection with them, there are also many activities that can help with child development. These not only stimulate a child’s mind, but also promote physical health, social skills, and emotional well-being.

Activities to Help with Your Child’s Development

1. Reading

Reading is one of the best ways to stimulate a child’s imagination and cognitive skills. Even at a young age, reading with your child can help them develop language skills and learn to recognize letters and words. As they grow older, reading can help with comprehension, critical thinking, and vocabulary. There are many books that are appropriate for different age groups. It just takes a bit of researching and getting to know your child, so you have a grasp of what they’ll be into!

2. Outdoor Play

Going through a pandemic made us realize how crucial outdoor play is in the development of our children. Outdoor play is not only fun. It also promotes physical activity, which is vital for a child’s physical development. Additionally, playing outside helps with social skills as children learn to interact with others.

3. Playing an Instrument

Music can help with cognitive development, as well as emotional well-being. Singing or learning to play an instrument can improve memory, language, and creativity. Moreover, music can help with stress reduction and emotional regulation. Try to explore what type of instrument your child may be into and from there, enroll them in classes or hire a teacher!

4. Doing Art

Drawing, painting, and sculpting can help with fine motor skills and creativity. These activities also promote self-expression and emotional regulation, as children learn to express themselves through these types of outlets.

5. Playing a Sport

Participating in sports can help with physical health, as well as social skills and teamwork. Sports can teach children about discipline, goal-setting, and perseverance as well. Moreover, they can learn more about cooperation, compromise, and empathy. “For me, the three most important things that I’ve developed in sports are discipline, accountability, and flexibility,” shares Jamel Pangandaman, a national athlete.

6. Cooking and Baking

Cooking and baking with your child teaches them important life skills. In addition, following recipes and measuring ingredients can assist them with reading comprehension and basic math concepts.

7. Playing Board Games

If it’s a rainy day or you find your children stuck indoors, board games can help them with cognitive development. Playing board games with each other allows them to learn to take turns, communicate effectively, and strategize.
