Antman and The Wasp: Quantumania is a Superhero Family Trip Into Space
Antman and The Wasp: Quantumania sets the bar for Marvel’s Phase 5 with a more family-centric theme.
It’s become part of almost every family’s list of bonding activities to go to the theatres and watch the latest Marvel Studios movie, especially since Antman and The Wasp: Quantumania is the first of Marvel’s Phase 5. While it follows the formula of superheroes clashing with the big, scary villain, the new villain is more powerful and well-known among the old comic book fans: Kang, The Conqueror, he who exists beyond time. And for Antman and The Wasp to clash with a strong villain, it sets a precedent for even stronger ones to come with more characters joining the Avengers family.

The Avengers Family Deals with the Multiverse
If we look at the latest trend in the Marvel movies, it all follows a family-themed storyline with a bit of a twist. Doctor Strange: Multiverse of Madness emphasized that heavily with the Scarlet Witch just wanting to be with her family, even resorting to wielding the corrupted grimoire known as the Darkhold to fulfill her wish. The Guardians of the Galaxy holiday short has Peter Quill (played by Chris Pratt) discovering he had a half-sister in Mantis from his father, Ego (who was revealed in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2). So, Antman and The Wasp: Quantumania is no different as the movie tackles Scott Lang, living his life and trying to bond with his teenage daughter, Cassie.
Their bond is ever-so-typical as there are rifts here and there as often seen in a father raising a teenage daughter. We see the hurtful words, clash of ideals, and even a symbolism of clashing ideals: the difference between an experienced superhero and one who’s just raring to go help people. It’s even more obvious in Scott and Cassie’s father-daughter relationship. Their banter feels like a tribute to parents who are trying to figure out their teenagers, wondering why they’re insisting on something so crazy, such as fighting someone as powerful as Kang the Conqueror to save a world they’re trying to get out of.

Antman and The Wasp: Quantumania: The Little Things Start Cropping Up
But what the movie tackles is how a bunch of little things can make one big, ugly thing. Whether it’s lies or even small decisions, they all eventually make something big. Ants have been doing it for years and so has Marvel with their multiple films that focus on teasing the Multiverse to eventually introduce the next big baddie: Kang The Conqueror. We recommend watching Loki: Season 1, which should be available on Disney Plus, to get a good idea of how the Multiverse functions as it explains the theories and also teases Kang’s existence towards the end of the season. Unfortunately, that’s the main issue of most Marvel films. It gets difficult to enter the franchise when it looks like there are just too many films to catch up on in understanding the latest installment.
So, we’ll narrow it down: start with Loki Season 1 then, Doctor Strange: Multiverse of Madness, and then Spiderman: No Way Home. This will at least set the family up to better appreciate the movie.

It’s a watch that needs a bit of observation and recall from past movies
Although the Antman movies usually go for more light-hearted humor and wholesome conversations, Antman and The Wasp: Quantumania is a little more serious as it sets up the stage for Marvel’s Phase 5. With many of the Avenger’s powerhouses no longer present, it leaves many to wonder how the others will do. Some already started theorizing that one powerhouse will have a redemption arc and another will play a more pivotal role after a bit of multiverse traveling. But Antman and The Wasp: Quantumania is a good start as it moves the spotlight away from the usual faces of the Avengers to those who are inheriting the mantle.
Catch Antman and The Wasp: Quantumania as it will start showing in the theatres on February 15, 2023.
