Avatar: The Last Airbender Celebrates 20th Anniversary With Avatar: Seven Havens

For the “kids” who grew up with Avatar: The Last Airbender, now we have a chance to share our childhood with our kids with Avatar: Seven Havens

It looks like our childhood comes back as Nickelodeon and the producers of the beloved Avatar: The Last Airbender teases a new series — Avatar: Seven Havens — to celebrate the franchise’s twentieth (20th) anniversary. The avatar cycle continues as the new avatar, an unnamed Earthbender and her twin, redefine their role as the bridge between the spirit realm and humans as they navigate a world devastated by a cataclysm. With the Avatar cycle reset due to the events in Avatar: Legend of Korra, what adventure awaits the new avatar?

Nickelodeon teased the series in a reel with two of the famous voice actors announcing the news: Dante Basco, the voice of Prince Zuko, and Janet Varney, the voice of the previous avatar, Korra.

So, what’s in store for the new avatar?

What’s interesting about Avatar: Seven Havens is the way people see the Avatar has changed. From being the bridge between the Spirit Realm and the Human World, they are now known as, Dante Basco reveals, “Humanity’s Destroyer.” They are no longer a savior. Shattered by a devastating cataclysm, the world is now on the brink of collapse with only one stronghold left.

“I wonder what the last avatar did to cause that,” remarks Janet Varney in the reel as she was the voice of the previous avatar, Korra.

Some things remain unchanged such as the cycle. With Korra, a waterbender being the previous avatar, the new avatar is an earthbender. But what’s interesting is that she now has a twin! Will the other twin have the same ability? What does it mean to be born as the twin of the supposed chosen one? But as far as we know, Korra’s actions from Legend of Korra, especially making the Spirit Realm more accessible, may have been the catalyst for bringing the four nations and Republic City to its knees.

The Impact of Avatar: The Last Airbender and Legend of Korra On Us

Parents who grew up with Nickelodeon will most likely remember spending their afternoons watching Avatar: The Last Airbender. The adventures of a twelve-year-old (although, he was actually 112 years old) Airbender named Aang weren’t just about him accomplishing the feat of mastering the bending of the four elements but also learning the philosophy of each. Some of us may even base our life’s philosophy and parenting on the wise sayings of Uncle Iroh!

Then, there’s the redemption arc of Prince Zuko. Going through a realistic display of breaking generational trauma, Prince Zuko goes from villain to protagonist as he breaks away from his father, Fire Lord Ozai, and becomes his own person to rebuild and redeem the Fire Nation in the eyes of the four nations. He eventually even goes against the “golden child,” his younger sister Azula, a villain and a victim of narcissistic parenting. For any parent breaking that cycle, Zuko’s character development shines a beacon of hope that they can do it so long as they have someone like Uncle Iroh in their corner.

However, this doesn’t mean that Avatar: Legend of Korra didn’t have her own impact. While Aang’s story was a journey of maturity and finding the agency to change history, Korra’s story shared a different journey: what does the avatar do now that the biggest threat to the world’s balance and peace has been resolved? The Avatar, for many years, has been an instrument for battle. What about when the world needs a mediator?

Any other details about Avatar: Seven Havens?

As of now, there’s no final release date for the new Avatar: Seven Havens and no concept art yet for the newest avatar to join the cycle. However, Dante Basco and Janet Varney dropped that Braving the Elements, the watch-along podcast for all things Avatar, would be dropping more details regarding the series. Currently, the podcast is available on Spotify which means we can listen to it if we’re doing things around the house or going around.

Now of course, if we want to relive our childhood or refresh our memory regarding Avatar: The Last Airbender series, there are comics that cover the aftermath of the series such as The Search, Smoke and Shadow, Azula in the Spirit Temple (the spin-off series of Azula’s aftermath of The Search), Toph Beifong’s Metalbending Academy and many others.
