5 Books on Drawing for Kids to Learn From

When kids have an affinity for drawing, here are some books we can get them to help hone their skills.

Kids love to draw, but there are some who can take it to the next level. Why not get them a book that teaches them drawing? There are a lot of books available in bookstores but not all of them have the same art style. Some teach anime while others teach a realistic style. Here are some books to buy our kids to hone their skills.

1. Figure Drawing: For All It’s Worth By Andrew Loomis

Figure Drawing: For All It's Worth By Andrew Loomis

Andrew Loomis not only draws well but easily describes the process of mastering certain figures. Humans are often the hardest to draw because of their many joints, which is why some of our children’s drawings can look a bit contorted. But his book is for those who are more advanced because they tackle a more realistic style of drawing, unlike the usual cartoonish styles seen in anime and animated cartoons.

2. Keys To Drawing By Bert Dodson

Many artists recommend for beginners Keys To Drawing by Bert Dodson because he teaches measurements and also angles. It’s a bit of an in-life application of Math skills, particularly Physics and Geometry. His approach revolves around the theme, “draw from life,” and whatever that means — he explains comprehensively and easily throughout the book, which is good for those starting out.

3. How To Draw Manga By Various Authors

Many of our kids love reading Japanese comics known as manga. With titles like Spy X Family, Kimetsu no Yaiba (Demonslayer), and others coming out, they’ll want to try copying the style. How To Draw Manga has been an old book since the early 2000s, teaching even millennials how to draw their favorite anime characters.

4. Doodle Everything!: Learn to Draw with 400+ Easy, Adorable Designs by Amy Latta

If humans are not your children’s subject of choice for their drawing then, they’ll certainly enjoy a doodle or two! Doodle Everything! Learn to Draw with 400+ Easy, Adorable Designs by Amy Latta teaches kids the joy of drawing little and cute objects which they can eventually transform into laptop stickers. It’s also a way to encourage personalization of their things. Some even sell their stickers for PHP 50.00 to PHP 100.00 a piece.

5. Kawaii Doodle Class by Zainab Khan, creator of Pic Candle

As a known illustrator, Zainab Khan also published a book for kids who want to learn how to doodle something cute. In Japanese, the word kawaii means cute which means a lot of their drawings will be eliciting a few “awws” and “cuties” every time someone sees it. Some kids have even made a business out of it, selling it to their friends by taking on commissions.

These books on drawing teach how different subjects are applied!

What we sometimes forget about drawing is that it teaches our kids about different subjects, just not in the usual read-the-textbook kind of way. By understanding anatomy, kids learn about the body; bones, muscles, and even the alignment of certain limbs. They also learn how people differ from one another. If they learn perspectives, they learn how the world is in 3D. And even if they learn how to draw in a kawaii way — they’re still doing some good by creating feel-good content for those who need a sticker or two!
