Tips When Building A New House by Nico Bolzico and Solenn Heusaff
Solenn Heusaff and Nico Bolzico give a glimpse on what it takes to build a new house.
The choice to build a new house isn’t an easy one. There’s checking the neighborhood, the land, if it floods, or if it’s in a safe area. Then, there’s also checking if the materials are all good to use and if your contractor is available. From March 2021, both Solenn Heusaff and Nico Bolzico have been building a new house for the last two years because the pandemic slightly delayed it. Now that the area’s “enclosed” — according to Solenn — here are other things that go into building a new house based on their vlog.
1. If the space allows, have a garden.
The pandemic taught us a lesson in keeping a garden to make sure the kids have a place to play in. Especially with Tili, Maëlys, Pochola, El Gato, and their tortoise needing some space, a garden’s the perfect place for them to get their daily dose of Vitamin D from the sun. Also, for parents with gamer kids, it’s a more literal meaning to the words “go touch grass.”
2. Have a weekly check if ever on how the building is going.
Although Solenn and Nico had a hard time with their busy schedules, they still drop in to check on the progress. Hence, them vlogging their surprise visit. When building a house, there’s always bound to be some trouble, especially with those trying to squat or break in. Even if the village is a gated subdivision, always pass by for a good check-up to make sure everything is going according to the architect’s and engineer’s plans. That, and nobody skimps on materials. That’s not going to be good in the long run.
3. If you can, get all your fixtures in one shop.
During the vlog, Solenn and Nico went to one shop for bathroom fixtures for the Master Bedroom and her painting studio in the new house. It saves a lot of stress and travel also if going to one shop, especially if we already have an account there. Being friends with some of the salespeople and managers of these home fixture stores at least lessens the stress of having to repeat what you want over and over again.
4. Visualize the house on the computer first.
One of the biggest mistakes is relying on our imagination to visualize what a room looks like because some designs just don’t work. With there being Photoshop and Apple having all sorts of designer programs, it’s easier to visualize now how the house will look along with the divisions. It makes it easier for Feng Shui also.
5. Choose a material that’s anti-slip!
Especially when kids are running around or someone like Pochola seems to be skidding all over the place, flooring should be made with an anti-slip material. With Tili exploring more of her surroundings and Maëlys eventually learning how to walk in the same house, that kind of material is a must-have for floors.
6. Choose your paints carefully.
There are different kinds of paints but some paints perform better in certain areas than others. For the roof, Solenn Heusaff chose a type of paint with cement for the new house’s roof. “It’s what you put before the tiles,” she explains. “So when it rains, it doesn’t just leak.”
The best paint for kids’ rooms is the one with anti-bacterial properties. Usually those kinds of paints, they dry quickly and people can immediately sleep in, she adds. “It’s washable and usually odorless.”
There’s a lot that goes into building a new home!
While many of us are tired of condo living or living in the metro, building a new home is not a small decision to make. It takes time and investment, something that can be anxiety-inducing if the math isn’t done right. But when both agree, always oversee the progress of the home’s progress together. It’s also a bonding activity like what Nico and Solenn did.
