Here’s What We Know About The New Pixar Movie Elio

Preparing to release on June 20, 2025, Pixar releases a family-friendly sci-fi film: Elio

Every parent, especially those who preferred the company of books and science when growing up, will recall feeling awkward and out of place. Other kids would make fun of their interests and sometimes, even their parents would dismiss their interests in fear of other kids bullying them. From the same studio that produced Wall-E and The Incredibles, Pixar’s Elio is a story of finding a sense of belonging in the world — whether it’s on Earth or in space.

The story of embracing awkwardness

Tween years were probably the most awkward; old enough to stop playing with toys but not old enough to understand the strange social conventions that teenagers and adults just know. The same applies to 11-year-old Elio, who is being raised by his Aunt Olga — a soldier, and his current interest: outer space. His deep interest in aliens and outer space has other kids raising their eyebrows at him and avoiding him as he attempts all sorts of things — including volunteering to be “kidnapped” by aliens.

His efforts eventually pay off and he lives his wildest dream, joining the Communiverse — a gathering of alien ambassadors. As they mistake him for the ambassador of Earth, he befriends them in hopes of avoiding an intergalactic crisis. He also finds a friend in Glordon, an alien who is in an awkward situation of his own: trying to prove to his father, Grygon, that he is no conqueror.

A story of finding one’s tribe, Elio assures parents and their children that somewhere out there, they will have a person and place to belong.

Catch Pixar’s Elio (2025) this coming June 20, 2025!

Although the movie was originally planned for 2024, Pixar delayed Elio due to the longest SAG-AFTRA strike in Hollywood history: the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. Besides labor and work conditions, the negotiations also included the ethical use of Artificial Intelligence which, due to the overreliance on it, has cost creatives their jobs.

But now that it’s coming out in the summer of 2025 on June 20, the kids will have a movie to help them transition to the next school year. After all, once the summer break ends, kids return to school and it can be pretty awkward when they either move school or are reshuffled with new classmates.
