Jackie Go: One Day at a Time

Jackie Go gets candid about parenting her teen and tween children and how she navigates their growing independence.

This story of Jackie Go appeared in the Modern Parenting Mother’s Day and Father’s Day May 2024 issue.

There’s always something bittersweet about seeing your kids grow up. One moment they’re small enough to fit in your arms, the next they are morphing into actual human beings while growing at lightning speed. And for Jackie Go — whose ability to juggle various endeavors is the dream for many parents — it’s no different.

As a mother to both a teen and a tween, she finds nostalgia for that part of their childhood. “I miss the times when my two kids were attached to my hip,” Jackie shares. “There are times I miss carrying them with one hand while the other holds the diaper bag. I miss them being babies — while the nights were long, the years were definitely short. I feel like this season of motherhood flew by.”

When times are changing…

But while parenting during these transitional periods can be a challenge at times, it’s one that Jackie takes with open arms. “As teens and tweens, I’m all in for this stage in my children’s lives, as they try and figure out who they are,” she shares.

“For sure they’ll make mistakes, they’ll fail, but I know they’ll try and learn from it. I’m looking forward to seeing the people they will eventually become — it won’t be easy but they know I’ll always be here to support them as they go through it all.”

When asked what she would tell the future versions of her kids, it’s that she knows they’ll get through it, no matter what. “You will find yourself, you will learn to love yourself, and know you will always have me as your support,” says Jackie.

Moreover, she wants to make sure that her kids don’t feel pressured to rush through these transitions, as they bring new lessons. “Don’t be in a hurry to figure things out, because every stage, every season of your life, is meant to serve a purpose. Grow through what you will go through,” Jackie says.

Becoming the mom she is

Identity, after all, is a prevalent theme when it comes to any transition — and a scary one at that during those formative years. As luck may have it, by helping her kids navigate through these questions, Jackie also fulfills her dream: becoming a mom.

“Mother’s Day is special because it reminds me of how fortunate I am to live my dream,” she shares. “Even at a young age, I’ve always known I wanted to be a mom. And I’m grateful God chose me as the mother of my children.”
