Never Too Late: Jessy Mendiola Chases Her Childhood Dream
Celebrity mom Jessy Mendiola proves that parents can never be too old to chase a dream.
If there’s one thing many parents are secretly bitter about, it’s a dream they can’t fulfill due to a never-ending list of responsibilities. Eventually, time passes by and they choose instead to live with the regret they couldn’t accomplish or find a new dream. However, celebrity mom Jessy Mendiola posted on Instagram, sharing that she’s now pursuing a childhood dream of hers: ballet dancing.
“When I was younger, we couldn’t afford ballet classes. I remember watching other kids in their ballet outfits during a class at a dance studio in a mall in Makati. I kept telling myself “one day, magagawa rin kita,” she captions the post.
Manifesting one’s dreams
As kids, we dream of all sorts of things. An airplane pilot, an astronaut, a fairy princess, a dragonlord — our imagination runs wild with the various possibilities.
But, the harsh truth of reality remains: we can’t always have what we want. This truth becomes more glaring and obvious as we trudge through college and work ourselves to the bone to support our families. While it’s easy to embrace and accept the truth, others willingly try one last time to see if they can make their dreams a reality. Naysayers will say it’s too late for any of us to accomplish our childhood dreams but, Jessy Mendiola offers a comeback we can use to silence them:
“Now, I keep telling myself that it’s never too late (or I’m never too old😜) to start something I’ve always wanted to do since I was a kid. Here’s to trying new things no matter how old (or late) you are, the most important thing is that you are happy and you are still willing to learn after all these years. 🩰”
She adds that she’s looking forward to dancing with her daughter, Rosie.
Easier said than done
When we try out for our dreams, we’re quick to designate Time as our enemy. Being on-call for our families 24/7 burns us out; the routinary planning and being our family’s clean-up crew drains us so much that we don’t have the energy anymore to break the cycle. When the day ends, we collapse on our beds after a long day and sleep. It’s only upon waking then blame ourselves for sleeping because so much could have been done.
However, we still have the power to decide how to use Time. Sleeping recharges us; nobody wants to chase after their child if they don’t sleep. A class for our hobbies or childhood dreams refreshes us; it reminds us what it’s like to be a kid again. And eventually, it grants a skill that most parents forget: seeing the world through their children’s eyes.
So just like Jessy Mendiola, it’s our turn to take control of Time. Our childhood dreams won’t accomplish themselves. And who knows? Maybe we’ll say Jessy Mendiola and Rosie perform one day as mother and daughter!
