LeBron James Gets His Own Doll In Barbie World
Mattel announced that the NBA star is the first ‘Kenambassador’ because of his positive impact on culture, style, and community
Ken just got competition in the Barbie world. Mattel announced they’ve “Kenfied” NBA star LeBron James, making him the first “Kenambassador.”
“LeBron emerged from humble beginnings to become a basketball legend and activist, vowing to give back to the community that raised him with the LeBron James Family Foundation,” Mattel announced on its Barbie pages. “ From housing, healthcare, job training, and more, LeBron and his foundation have rolled up their sleeves to provide true generational change. ”

LeBron as a Role Model
Krista Berger, Senior Vice President of Barbie and Global Head of Dolls, Mattel, said they’re very excited about LeBron, knowing the importance of Ken in Barbie’s world.
“We are excited to bring fans a new presentation of Ken that celebrates LeBron as a role model, his icon status, lasting impact on culture, and dedication to setting a positive example for the next generation to reach their limitless potential,”
The Los Angeles Lakers star and father of three said he was deeply honored by the recognition Mattel gave him as an ambassador.
“As a young kid, I was fortunate to have role models who not only inspired me but also showed me what’s possible through hard work and dedication,” he said through a news release. “Now, as an adult, I understand how vital it is for young people to have positive figures to look up to. That’s why partnering with Barbie to release the LeBron James Kenbassadors doll is such an honor. It’s an opportunity to recognize the powerful impact of role models who instill confidence, inspire dreams, and show kids that they, too, can achieve greatness.”

The LeBron James doll was announced as Mattel and his foundation named after him are partnering for projects that will benefit his hometown of Akron, Ohio. Aside from his foundation, Mattel has also committed to donating his book, I Am More Than That, for every purchase of the LeBron doll at Target stores in the US and on its website. Proceeds will go to Save the Children.

The Barbie World Is Expanding
LeBron’s doll is the latest in the growing list of dolls Barbie has launched through the years. Barbie has released dolls inspired by several stars including Tina Turner, Laverne Cox, and fashion designer Vera Wang.
The company has also released special dolls inspired by the cultures of different countries. Its most recent releases include the mananaggal doll, based on a Filipino creature, and the Filipina Barbie last October. It also released a special Barbie doll in time for Chinese New Year.
