Music That Helps Parents and Kids Get Through the Hard Days Together

Sometimes, all one needs is to listen to music to remind oneself that everything will be okay

Nothing beats resting after a long day at work and putting on some music. But then comes your child who sits next to you, looking sad. That’s when you decide to make them listen to cheer them up.

Music has been an integral part of people’s lives. It sets the mood for many, while for others, it’s a form of healing, especially soothing music.

At Modern Parenting, we are firm believers in how music makes people cheer up when they’re feeling down or going through hard times. In celebration of World Mental Health Day, MP’s writers rounded up their favorite tunes to listen to during a long day, and we hope they become part of your playlist too.

“You Are Enough” by Citizen Soldier

Written and sung by a rocker group led by a therapist, they transform the feelings from mental illnesses into songs. “You Are Enough” is a song that battles the feelings of worthlessness from depression.

“Stand” by Rascall Flatts

One of the country band’s less popular songs, “Stand” by Rascall Flatts is about how people get up again despite being knocked down. The song was recently remastered this year and performed as a duet with Brandon Lake.

“Live and Learn” by Crush 40

Kids and Sonic the Hedgehog fans will recognize this song as the theme song of Dreamcast game Sonic Adventure 2. “Live and Learn,” despite being 18 years old, remains relevant as it describes how hard life can feel too fast before being hit with the saying “live and learn!” The song was also used in the movie Sonic the Hedgehog 3, where Maria sings an acoustic version, and another is remastered by Junkie XL.

“Keep On Movin'” by Five

As someone who grew up in the ’90s, where boy bands were the big thing, there are so many songs to love. British group Five’s music video for “Keep On Movin'” may have some cheesy dance moves by today’s standards, but the message of the song reminds people that, despite the challenges of life, one should keep moving and fight another day.

“Quit” by SB19

“Quit” is part of the group’s latest EP, Simula at Wakas. It was a different sound compared to their past hits, but the lyrics hit hard, especially the lines “Ayokong mamatay, they tryna kill the colours in my mind, when all my heart wanted was to be kind.

The song reminds people not to fear and that it’s okay to be afraid, and that days will be better.

“You Will Be Found” from the musical Dear Evan Hansen

The UK cast of Dear Evan Hansen was in Manila last September, and one of the songs from the musical was “You Will Be Found.” Listening to this song was cathartic, assuring that in the middle of loneliness and anxiety, you are not alone.

In a time where social media dominates people’s lives and they find themselves battling depression, “You Will Be Found” is a reminder that every voice is heard and that listening matters.

“Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)” by Kelly Clarkson

One of Kelly Clarkson’s hits, this song reminds people to celebrate overcoming life’s challenges. It also points out that the silent battles sometimes make people stronger after they fall and pick themselves up again.

Why not make a playlist with your kids?

One of the best things to do with your kids is to make a music playlist of songs you both enjoy listening to. It’s also an opportunity to introduce them to the songs from your time, and in return, listen to what they love.

Music not only relaxes – it’s a form of bonding and communication with your kids.
