‘Percy Jackson’ Publisher Takes On Philippine Mythology: Highsummer by Tori Tadiar

Disney Hyperion tackles Philippine Mythology through the soon-to-be-published trilogy, Highsummer by Tori Tadiar.

It’s time for Philippine Mythology to take the spotlight as Percy Jackson‘s publisher, Disney Hyperion, takes on award-winning Filipina illustrator Tori Tadiar’s Highsummer. Since the Percy Jackson series made a big impact in kids’ lives, there’s hope that Highsummer will do the same. While the former series shed more light and encouraged kids to look more into Greek Mythology, there’s hope that Philippine Mythology will be appreciated just as much as the former.

Why should we let our kids read up on mythology?

There are a lot of lessons to learn from mythology. Back then, mythology served as the “science” of ancient civilizations that didn’t have the tools to get exact measurements. This “science” may seem ridiculous to some of us now. But we can’t deny that this served as a backbone for many of the books we encouraged our kids to read. Harry Potter relied on the British mythology of Merlin. Lord of the Rings tackled the vast Irish mythology of the Fae. Percy Jackson made Greek mythology easier to read. Even Marvel took on Norse Mythology, giving Thor and Loki faces through Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston.

Tori Tadiar: Who is she?

The Filipina illustrator may be working full-time as an IT professional but Tori Tadiar’s also responsible for creating other comics and stories that encourage girl power such as Sagala and Twinkle, Twinkle. For Highsummer, the story revolves around a 12-year-old Mika from Illustra High School. Unfortunately, she accidentally awakens the ancient Philippine pantheon. From ancient curses and a variety of old Filipino elements, it’s a more fun way for our kids to learn about Philippine culture.

Highsummer Tentative Release: 2024

According to Tori’s Twitter, the publishers are targeting to release Highsummer in 2024. Unfortunately, there’s no report yet on where the story will be released. However, to tide things over, Tori has Sagala and Twinkle, Twinkle on Penlab. Hard copies of her existing work are on both Lazada and Shopee if we’re trying to keep the screen time to a minimum.
