Remembering Betty White, Everyone’s Golden Girl

The actress, known for her roles in The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Golden Girls, and Hot in Cleveland died at the age of 99 on New Year’s Eve

Actress Betty White has been a fixture on television for many. But for me, she was Rose Nylund, one of the beloved characters of the classic TV show The Golden Girls. The show was a story of four elderly women about their lives in a home in Miami, Florida.

Back then, I was so young and only laughed at the jokes they make but it was a memorable show that became part of TV history. Betty earned herself a big fan base once again.

Her death at the age of 99 just weeks before her 100th birthday saddened generations of fans who grew up with her. Beyond her life as an actress, she would also be remembered by many for her work as an animal advocate, her sense of humor, and her wisdom.

Here’s a look at some of the tributes made in her honor.

The U.S. Forest gives Betty White an honorary forest ranger position

In a 2010 speech, Betty said that before she got into acting, she always wanted to be a forest ranger.

“In my heart, I’ve been a forest ranger all my life, but now I’m official,” she said.

“Wilderness is harder and harder to find these days on this beautiful planet. And we’re abusing our planet to the point of almost no return,” she said after being announced as an honorary forest ranger by the U.S. Forest Service.

“I know this is an honorary position but it’s also one more I can use a voice to try to protect the remaining beautiful parts of this gorgeous world we live on.”

Betty loved animals and wanted to be a zookeeper as a child

Although the actress never had children of her own, she spent her life in various animal causes and has supported the Los Angeles Zoo for many years.

“We are incredibly saddened by Betty’s passing and offer our deepest condolences to her family and friends as we collectively mourn the loss of a true legend, on and off the screen,” Tom Jacobson, president of the Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association (GLAZA), the nonprofit partner of the Los Angeles Zoo said.

“Her work with the Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association spans more than five decades, and we are grateful for her enduring friendship, lifelong advocacy for animals, and tireless dedication to supporting our mission.”

The actress served as a board member of the GLAZA and even did a TV special. She also said that one of her dreams was to be a zookeeper.

The U.S. Army’s tribute

In a tweet, the U.S. Army also paid tribute to the actress.

“Not only was she an amazing actress, [but] she also served during WWII as a member of the American Women’s Voluntary Services. A true legend on and off the screen.”

Still putting up with her

In 2018, the Television Academy paid tribute to the actress, wherein she said that she was grateful that a lot of people are still putting with her for many years.

” All I can say is its such blessed business to be in. And how lucky can I be and how much I say thank you to each and everyone. Thank you so much.”

Ryan Reynolds’ tribute

As various celebrities in Hollywood remembered her after her passing, Ryan Reynolds, her co-star in The Proposal wrote a loving message in her honor.

“The world looks different now. She was great at defying expectation. She managed to grow very old and somehow, not old enough. We’ll miss you, Betty. Now you know the secret,” he wrote.

Upon hearing the news of her death, co-star Sandra Bullock also paid tribute to the actress.

“I don’t drink vodka … but I will tonight, on ice, with a slice of lemon with a hot dog on the other side, and just be okay being sad,” she said according to People magazine.

“I’ll have to buy some rose-colored glasses because Betty was that for all of us.”

Sandra presented a lifetime achievement award to the actress during the Screen Actors Guild Awards in 2010.

Betty White may be gone but her work and contribution to Hollywood will always be remembered. She was not just a Golden Girl on television but also in everyone’s hearts.
