Channel your inner diva by belting out these classic Whitney tracks

For parents who grew up in the ’90s, chances are you remember The Bodyguard — the iconic film that paired pop legend Whitney Houston with Hollywood actor Kevin Costner. Whitney played Rachel Marron, a global superstar targeted by a dangerous stalker. Kevin played Frank Farmer, a former CIA agent hired to protect her and her young son.

Fast forward to today: The Bodyguard has been reimagined as a musical, following successful runs on London’s West End and in cities around the world. Now playing in Manila at the Proscenium Theater in Rockwell, Makati, the show stars Filipino West End talent Christine Allado as Rachel and Matt Blaker as Frank. It runs until October 19.

Whether you’re planning a rare date night, reliving a favorite film from your younger years, or introducing your kids to the music that defined a generation, here are 10 must-listen Whitney Houston songs to set the stage before seeing the show.

1. “Greatest Love of All”

Originally recorded by George Benson in 1977, Whitney’s version became one of the most powerful anthems of self-love and resilience. It appeared on her 1985 debut album and re-entered the charts after her passing in 2012.

2. “Run to You”

Written for The Bodyguard soundtrack, “Run to You” was initially intended as a breakup ballad but was later reworked into a soaring love song. In the musical, the emotional number is performed by Rachel and her sister Nicki in alternating scenes.

3. “One Moment in Time”

Whitney recorded this power ballad as the official theme for the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. Inspirational and timeless, it captures the emotional high of striving for greatness — a must-have in any Whitney playlist.

4. “How Will I Know”

A smash hit from her self-titled debut album, this bubbly ‘80s dance-pop track was originally intended for Janet Jackson. Fortunately, it landed with Whitney — and helped launch her into superstardom.

5. “Saving All My Love for You”

Originally sung by Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr., this sultry ballad was reimagined by Whitney for her debut album. It became her first No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned her a Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.

6. “Queen of the Night”

Co-written by Whitney alongside hitmakers L.A. Reid, Babyface, and Daryl Simmons, this edgy, high-energy track gave her a rocker-chic edge. It’s one of the standout uptempo numbers in The Bodyguard and a favorite in the musical.

8. “I Have Nothing”

A centerpiece of The Bodyguard soundtrack, this emotional ballad showcases Whitney’s powerhouse vocals and emotional depth. Despite the film’s mixed reviews, this song (along with “I Will Always Love You”) became a global hit — and a favorite for singing competitions everywhere.

9. “I Will Always Love You”

Originally written and recorded by Dolly Parton, Whitney’s version turned this country ballad into a soul-shaking farewell anthem. The song became one of the best-selling singles of all time.
