The Good, The Negative, And The Purpose in Skincare According to Tiffany Masterson

Tiffany Masterson shares that sometimes, you really just have to find purpose to find what is good and ultimately cut out the negative in both skincare and working motherhood.

This story first came out in Modern Parenting’s 2022 print edition.

Mom entrepreneur, skinthusiast and Drunk Elephant founder, Tiffany Masterson worked hard to balance her work and find the little moments she loves to call “GEMs.”

“Spend ‘GEM’ time with your children. This stands for genuine encounter moments. Sometimes, it must be quality over quantity. The kids feel good when I take the time to be with each of them one on one,” Tiffany tells Modern Parenting.

Although the line between work and home blurs at times, Tiffany points out that she tries her best to always follow her philosophy: focus on the good and cut out the negative. “I eat well most of the time, exercise often, work really hard, try to get enough sleep, spend time with my friends and family, cook, walk my dog, and spend quality time with my husband and kids. I treat people the way I want to be treated. Those are the things that keep me balanced and healthy.”

This same philosophy eventually seeped into her skincare brand, the Drunk Elephant, committing itself to use only ingredients that benefit the skin’s health.

The “Perfect” Answer for a Frustrated Skinthusiast

When Tiffany first designed Drunk Elephant, it was to answer her frustration with the skincare industry’s use of ingredients such as fragrances, essential oils, drying oils, silicones, chemical sunscreens, and dyes (or what she calls the Suspicious 6). “I struggled to find a product that was clinically effective and still felt safe to use. Also, my skin didn’t handle fragrance or essential oils well. I couldn’t find a line that didn’t contain them. But I also realized to get what I wanted, I would need to develop it myself. So, I made the big leap.”

Unfortunately, she knew many of those “negatives” were a source of appeal for those in the skincare industry. Hard as the lesson was, she knew she had to move on and let things go. Especially when, she knew that these negatives did not fit in her philosophy at all. “I think my biggest challenge in a way has been to avoid the trends. I knew what I wanted and that it hadn’t exactly been done before. That can be scary.”

Tiffany understands those small companies often deal with the bigger pushback of convincing people of their vision. “People don’t always get the vision that’s driving you. My biggest challenge has been getting people around me to trust that doing things differently can work, and work even better in some cases.”

Good Skincare is Purposeful Skincare

It would not be wrong to say that the Drunk Elephant and Tiffany are intertwined in promoting their philosophy of purposefulness. By drawing a line between the good and the negative with Drunk Elephant, Tiffany Masterson proves that one can find and build purpose upon something as small as skincare.
