The Simpsons Are Returning to Theaters With a Sequel in 2027

The sequel is scheduled for July 23, 2027

It’s official — The Simpsons are coming back to the big screen. On Monday, September 29, 20th Century Studios and Disney teased that a second Simpsons movie is in the works, set for theatrical release on July 23, 2027.

The teaser image featured Homer Simpson’s hand holding a donut with pink frosting and sprinkles — shaped into the number 2. It was captioned, “Homer’s coming back for seconds.” Naturally, Homer’s signature catchphrase followed: “Woohoo!”

20 Years Later: What to Expect

The new movie marks the long-awaited follow-up to 2007’s The Simpsons Movie, where Homer plunged Springfield into environmental disaster by polluting the lake — putting the entire town (and his family) in peril.

Plot details for the upcoming film haven’t been revealed. Still, several reports noted that it’s occupying a release date previously held by an untitled Marvel project, suggesting Disney has high expectations.

A Legacy of Laughs and Lessons

First premiering in 1989, The Simpsons has become a cultural touchstone, now in its 37th season. Centered on the quirky but lovable Simpson family — Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie — the show has long balanced humor with heart.

While often irreverent, The Simpsons has tackled surprisingly real themes: Homer and Bart’s love-hate bond, Marge’s struggles to hold the family together, Lisa’s moral convictions, and Maggie’s silent resilience. Through chaos and comedy, the series has remained a mirror to American family life.

Whether you plan to watch it with your kids or just revisit it for old times’ sake, the sequel may spark conversations about how family, culture, and comedy have changed over the past 30+ years.

And yes — Maggie still has her pacifier.
