More than just second parents, aunts and uncles play vital roles in children’s lives—especially when parents or grandparents are not always present. Whether it’s offering emotional support, filling in for school events, or simply being a safe space, aunts and uncles are an essential part of the village that helps raise our kids.

Here are five important roles they often play in a child’s life:

They Speak Words of Affirmation

Just like parents, aunts and uncles can build a child’s confidence by consistently expressing love, pride, and support.

Lindsay Blackburn, an aunt and writer for Boundless.org, encourages aunts and uncles to affirm their nieces and nephews: “Take every opportunity to affirm your niece or nephew’s intrinsic value, character growth, and success.”

This affirmation can take many forms—words of encouragement, a handwritten note, a text, or even a heartfelt social media post.

In our own household, we make it a habit to assure our 6 and 5-year-old nephews that they are deeply loved—whether through spoken words or small gestures.

They Show Up When Needed

Let’s face it—parents can’t always be everywhere. Work schedules, emergencies, or travel sometimes mean missing out on important events in a child’s life.

That’s where aunts and uncles step in. They drive and pick kids up from school, chaperone birthday parties, attend school programs, and even fill in at PTA meetings when needed.

While they’ll never replace a parent, their presence sends a powerful message: “You’re not alone—we’re here for you.”

They’re Confidantes and Trusted Friends

Sometimes, kids are hesitant to open up to their parents. That’s when aunts or uncles become a vital emotional outlet. They’re the safe space kids can turn to when they need to talk, vent, or ask tough questions.

They don’t always need to give advice. Often, just being there to listen makes all the difference. And when guidance is needed, their perspective—loving but not parental—can be uniquely valuable.

They’re Cheerleaders Through and Through

Whether it’s acing a math test, scoring a goal in soccer, or performing in a school play, aunts and uncles are often the loudest cheerleaders in the room.

Their support boosts a child’s self-esteem and reinforces the idea that their efforts matter. Hugs, high-fives, or even a congratulatory kiss on the cheek can mean the world to a child who’s worked hard and wants to be seen.

They’re Mentors and Role Models

Aunts and uncles can inspire kids just by being themselves. Their careers, passions, and life experiences can open new doors in a child’s imagination.

From teaching a niece how to paint, to helping a nephew with math, to simply demonstrating a strong work ethic—these role models show kids what’s possible. They can mentor, guide, and encourage their growth in academics, sports, the arts, and more.

More Than Family, They’re Part of the Village

In today’s world, many parents are working hard—often away from their children—to build a better future. That’s why the presence of an engaged aunt or uncle becomes so crucial.

They aren’t just occasional babysitters or gift-givers; they’re part of the village raising that child. And the love, stability, and guidance they offer can leave a lifelong imprint.
