5 Tips to Follow During a Volcanic Smog Alert
In the event of a Volcanic Smog Alert, here are a few tips to remember to keep you and your family safe.
Last September 21, Thursday, state volcanologists said that Taal Volcano began emitting volcanic smog (also known as vog). This can adversely affect you and your family’s health and even damage crops and infrastructure. “Volcanic smog or vog has been observed over Taal Lake by the Taal Volcano Network and has lingered over the region until present,” the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) announced in its latest advisory. The development has also led several local government units in Batangas to suspend classes. Thus, in the event of a Volcanic Smog Alert, here’s a guide on what to do.
What is a Volcanic Smog or Vog?
Volcanic smog consists of fine droplets containing volcanic gas, which is acidic and can cause irritation of the eyes, throat, and respiratory tract with severities depending on the gas concentrations and durations of exposure.
Tips to Follow in the Event of a Volcanic Smog Alert:
1. Limit your exposure
Especially if you live near the area, avoid outdoor activities and stay indoors first. Shut all your doors and windows to block out the vog.
2. Wear a mask
If you do need to go outside, wear a mask — ideally an N95 — to keep yourself protected.
3. Drink lots of water
Drinking water helps reduce any throat irritation or constriction.
4. Use an air purifier
An air purifier can be a lifesaver by efficiently removing harmful particulate matter and sulfur dioxide from the indoor air. Therefore, this helps maintain a healthier and safer breathing environment. Its filtration capabilities ensure that even during periods of elevated volcanic emissions, indoor air quality remains significantly improved, reducing the risk of respiratory issues and discomfort.
5. Seek help if needed
Call your doctor if you feel like you or any of your family members are seriously affected. This is especially for children, the elderly, and pregnant women.
Keep You and Your Family Safe
Though Phivolcs assured that the Taal Volcano remains under Alert Level 1, it’s important to keep these tips in mind to keep you and your family safe during a Volcanic Smog Alert.
