WATCH: The Story of Whitney Houston’s Rise in ‘I Wanna Dance with Somebody’
Actress Naomi Ackie plays Whitney Houston, who is considered one of the best voices of her generation, in the movie Kasi Lemmons directed.
It’s finally happening! Whitney Houston’s untold story will be brought to life in the movie I Wanna Dance with Somebody which will hit international theaters this January 2023.
On Friday, Sony Pictures released the trailer for the film, starring BAFTA winner Naomi Ackie as Whitney Houston. The trailer showed Whitney’s beginnings as an aspiring singer from New Jersey, meeting music producer Clive Davis, singing before thousands of people at the Super Bowl in 1991, and a peek into her life as an artist and wife to ex-husband Bobby Brown.
Kasi Lemmons directed the movie and Anthony McCarten wrote the story. Meanwhile, Clive Davis serves as executive producer.
Whitney Houston’s Lasting Legacy
Nicknamed “The Voice,” Whitney Houston is known for so many classic hits. Among many songs that she popularized include “Saving All My Love for You,” her version of “The Greatest Love of All,” “I Wanna Dance with Somebody,” and “I’ll Always Love You.”
Whitney also dabbled in film, making her debut in The Bodyguard alongside Kevin Costner. The two remained good friends until her death in 2012.
Moreover, she appeared as the Fairy Godmother to singer Brandy Norwood in the Roger and Hammerstein film Cinderella. She lends her voice alongside Mariah Carey in the hit song “When You Believe” for the movie The Prince of Egypt, too.
Whitney’s family and marriage
Raised in New Jersey, Whitney went on to follow in the footsteps of her mom Cissy who is also a singer. Clive Davis eventually discovered her and produced some of the biggest songs in her career.
As her career skyrocketed, Whitney found love with singer Bobby Brown and married him in 1992. They had a daughter, Bobbi Kristina.
Their marriage, however, was rocky. It involved several fighting and scandals. They eventually divorced in 2007. Whitney and Bobby co-parented their daughter Bobbi.
In 2012, Whitney died after she was found unconscious inside the Beverly Hilton. She was given various tributes after her death. Her daughter Bobbi Kristina died in 2015 after suffering from pneumonia.
