3 Reasons Why Single Parents Deserve Respect
Single parenting is often misunderstood, and many don’t realize just how much these parents do every single day
We have been taught in school the importance of a complete family composed of a father, a mother, and a child. Unfortunately, not everyone is lucky because of different situations. Some are products of broken families, some lost parents early, and others have one parent abroad.
Being a solo or single parent is not as uncommon as it used to be, and the government has offered them perks. However, it seems they are still the target of inappropriate jokes. During the election campaign trail, several candidates have made derogatory or joking remarks about solo parents, which the Commission on Elections has called them out for.
Politics aside, solo parents deserve more than to be the target of jokes. We give you three reasons why.

They show up every day!
Yes, they are still parents. They attend to their kids’ needs, discipline them, and try to be with them as much as possible. Although one parent is not around, the solo parent will do everything to ensure their child’s future is better.
They take on different jobs to augment the family income
Several single parents take two to three jobs to augment the family income. Some even become breadwinners of their families, adding more responsibilities than just giving to their kids.
They didn’t choose this path, but they walk it with strength and selflessness.
Solo parents carry the responsibility despite less recognition
On top of working, single parents balance attending their kids’ school meetings, running errands, doing chores, and more. With barely any time for themselves, the rare quiet moments they get become all the more precious.
So before gossiping about their situation or calling them out for their alleged behavior on the job, practice compassion by checking up on them.

Single parent status is no joke
Being a parent is hard, so being a single parent is tough. What they do is no laughing matter, and regardless of the reason why they became single, it is something society should learn to understand.
So the next time you meet one, don’t just admire their resilience—offer support, extend kindness, and give them the respect they’ve long deserved.
