Mother Teresa And Me: Why It’s Relatable For Many

Mother Teresa and Me highlighted the struggles the late Mother Teresa went through and the challenge of a woman’s decision on unborn life

Mother Teresa is synonymous with the poor, whom she devoted her life to caring for after establishing the Missionaries of Charity in India. Her life has been depicted in several films, including Mother Teresa and Me, in which the challenges she faced alternate with the struggles of a young woman named Kavita.

Two Stories Of Different Times

In the film, we see how Mother Teresa started her mission in India, going to the poorest areas to teach after she was given permission. It wasn’t easy as she endured discrimination from priests and communities who were skeptical of her mission. She would later be joined by one of her students, who became Sister Agnes, as they helped the poorest of the poo,r including those who were sick and dying.

In the film, two highlights included Mother Teresa questioning her faith following the death of a girl named Mita, and when she established the Missionaries of Charity. Mita was a young girl she met in a poor village, who became a student and became close to her. When she got sick, Mother Teresa found her in a village of those struck by leprosy and tried to help.

Unfortunately, Mita killed herself, leaving Mother Teresa in tears and questioning what she could have done to save Mita.

When she was offered a run-down building to house the Missionaries of Charity, Mother Teresa was met with much defiance from a group that accused her of trying to convert their faith. She defied them by telling everyone inside to pray, and when the group, along with a doctor and police, entered, they saw the sisters attending to the sick.

The timeline alternates between Mother Teresa and present-day London during the film. In London, we meet Kavita, a music teacher and violinist. Kavita discovers she’s pregnant, but when she tells Rajiv, he avoids her.

Confused about what to do with the baby and with her parents arranging a marriage without her consent, Kavita heads to India to visit Deepali, a good friend of her parents. It’s in India that she discovers her true identity, learned to love, and spends time with the sick. Kavita decides to keep the child and start her life again.

Why The Film Is Worth Seeing

Mother Teresa and Me can be watched anytime. It’s worth checking out because it shows the human side of Mother Teresa. She also questioned her faith many times when she was alive, and this is normal.

Kavita, on the other hand, mirrors the situation of women who find themselves going through early pregnancy. Faced with choices, will she abort the child or keep it? How will it affect her future? Is she ready to be a parent? These are questions a lot of women find themselves facing when the reality of pregnancy hits them.

Mother Teresa and Me showed the importance of making choices. Some choices can be tough, but how you stand by them matters and makes you the person you are.
