How This Video Game Helped A Father Cope With Loss

Here’s how PRAGMATA helped a dad cope with the loss of his child

A grieving father’s emotional post on Reddit about the sci-fi game PRAGMATA sparked an outpouring of support from the gaming community after he shared that one of its characters, Diana, reminded him of his late daughter, 8-year-old Mackenzie. The father described how seeing Diana evoked memories of his child, opening a space where grief, memory, and digital storytelling unexpectedly intersected.

“When I watched some videos of PRAGMATA, Ella said, “Daddy, she reminds me of pictures of McKenzie. I wonder if Diana is like McKenzie?” So I purchased the whole bundle, and we started playing it. Diana is very much like both my daughters. Maybe I got a little bit teary-eyed. Maybe… I absolutely love this game and the time Ella spends with me. PRAGMATA is Therapeutic for my soul,” he wrote on the post.

When Games Become a Place for Grief

According to the father, the user named TheRealDuke777, his daughter had seizures and atrial tachycardia since she was 11 months old. Eventually, the issue developed into Super Ventricular Tachycardia (SVT). The little girl then passed away in January 2009.

The emotional weight of the post quickly spread across gaming forums, where users offered condolences, shared their own stories of loss, and reflected on how fictional characters can sometimes mirror real-life emotional anchors.

Even the character mentioned, Diana, responded to his post via X (formerly Twitter).

When Grief Finds Unexpected Spaces

For grieving parents, healing rarely follows a straight line. It moves through memory, through triggers, through moments that arrive uninvited—sometimes even through a character in a video game.

What happened around PRAGMATA is not about the game itself. It is about what people bring into it.

And in this case, a father’s grief met a community willing to sit with it instead of looking away.

In a digital world often criticized for disconnection, moments like these remind us of something simpler: even in pixels, people still find each other.
