A Battle To Survive: How Kaye Abad Dealt With Her Cancer Diagnosis

For Kaye Abad, survival itself becomes the victory

For many people, hearing the word “cancer” immediately feels like a death sentence. It carries grief before treatment even begins: fear for the future, fear for the body, fear for the family left emotionally suspended in uncertainty. For actress Kaye Abad, that reality quietly unfolded over the past year as she battled breast cancer away from the public eye.

Now cancer-free, Kaye recently opened up about the deeply personal journey through an emotional birthday vlog released on May 17, where she documented surgeries, recovery, stress, and the quiet resilience that carried her through.

When Life Suddenly Changes

Kaye’s health scare did not begin with breast cancer itself.

In her vlog, she revealed that she first experienced severe abdominal pain in September 2024. “Last September (2024), sumasakit yung tiyan ko,” she shared. Initially, she thought it was simply hyperacidity. “But then, na-alarm ako kasi it would last six hours.”

Tests later revealed multiple gallstones, leading to surgery. But after her gastroenterologist advised her to undergo a mammogram due to her age, another life-changing discovery followed: suspicious findings that eventually confirmed breast cancer.

The diagnosis thrust Kaye into a painful emotional reality many cancer patients live: learning how to stay present in life while feeling terrified underneath.

“I didn’t pretend I wasn’t sick. I just pretended to be well,” she admitted.

Denial will always be the first stage of grief. But diseases like cancer do not give time to grieve. Especially in for mothers, the last thing any mom wants to do is burden her children with the grief of a devastating disease.

They soldier. Fight. There’s only one acceptable end scenario: survive.

Surviving Through Faith and Family

Throughout her treatment, Kaye leaned heavily on faith and family support, particularly from her husband, Paul Jake Castillo, who accompanied her during medical treatment in Singapore.

“Mataas yung faith ko kay God na hindi niya ako pababayaan… I know He’s just there. Ngayon pa, I know, mas ngayon kailangan ko Siya, I know hindi Niya ko pababayaan,” she said in the vlog.

She even hugs her boys tearfully, as she was packing for the treatment. “I’ll miss my boys.”

While her youngest, her four-year-old, remained blissfully unaware, her eight-year-old promised to hold the fort in caring for his younger brother until she returned.

The emotional toll of cancer often extends beyond physical pain. It is the exhaustion of repeatedly facing hospitals, procedures, waiting rooms, and difficult conversations. The mental battle of trying to figure out which diagnosis is right and praying that it’s the best-sounding one can wear down one’s spirit, especially when reality looks either uncertain or bleak.

But survival slowly became possible one step at a time. It was, as she had captioned it, “an emotional roller coaster.”

In her vlog, Kaye tearfully shared the moment her doctor finally gave her the words she had been waiting for: “As of now, you can declare that you’re a survivor and you’re cancer-free.”

Nothing is more relieving for a cancer patient and their families to know they are in remission. The battle against cancer is a collective one; emotions will run high, money will be stretched, and some realities end up being too heavily defined by the cancer. Many netizens described her story as a reminder that early detection matters—and that hope still exists even in terrifying diagnoses.

Sometimes, Surviving Is Already Enough

Cancer changes how people look at life.

For some, it becomes a battle to stay alive long enough to watch their children grow up. For others, it becomes a painful lesson in slowing down, asking for help, and accepting vulnerability. Survival does not always look triumphant or cinematic. Sometimes it simply means enduring another day, another surgery, another moment of fear.

Kaye Abad’s story reminds families that strength is not always loud. Sometimes, it is quietly showing up despite the fear.
