Heathers the Musical Comes to Manila in 2027

The musical based on the 1989 cult classic starring Winona Ryder and Christian Slater explores fitting in, popularity, and the pressures young people face when trying to belong

Long before Clueless and Mean Girls gave us their own versions of high school It-girls, there was Heathers — the 1989 cult classic starring Winona Ryder and Christian Slater that looked beyond the glossy world of popularity and showed something much darker underneath.

Now, Heathers the Musical is coming to Manila.

GMG Productions, in association with Bill Kenwright Ltd. and Paul Taylor-Mills, is bringing the hit musical to Philippine audiences this January 2027.

Set at Westerberg High, the story follows Veronica Sawyer, a girl who suddenly finds herself welcomed into the school’s most popular clique: the Heathers. For someone who has spent her life on the sidelines, she finally gets what many teenagers secretly wish for — to be noticed, included, and seen as someone who matters.

But things take a darker turn when Jason “J.D.” Dean, the mysterious new student with a rebellious streak, enters her life. What follows is a story that explores popularity, peer pressure, cruelty, and the sometimes painful lengths young people go to just to feel like they belong.

Since premiering in 2013, Heathers the Musical has built a devoted following, thanks in part to songs such as “Seventeen,” “Candy Store,” “Meant to Be Yours,” “I Say No,” and “Dead Girl Walking.”

Meet the Manila Cast

Headlining the Manila production is Filipino performer Gerardine Sacdalan as Veronica Sawyer. She is joined by Louis Hearsey as Jason “J.D.” Dean, Liberty Stottor as Heather Chandler, Jessica Ibadin as Heather Duke, and Lou Henry as Heather McNamara.

Rounding out the principal cast are Veronica Carabai as Ms. Fleming/Veronica’s Mom, Sophie Manners as Martha Dunnstock, Markus Södergren as Kurt Kelly, Beau Jackson as Ram Sweeney, John Gurdían as Ram’s Dad/Big Bud Dean/Coach Ripper, and Reuben Browne as Kurt’s Dad/Veronica’s Dad/Principal Gowan.

The ensemble includes Christian De-Gallerie as Preppy Stud/Officer, Ellouise Delooze as New Wave Party Girl, Caitlin Garcia as Drama Club Drama Queen, Alexander Howarth as Hipster Dork, Charlotte O’Rourke as Midwestern Surfer Punk, Thomas Oxley as Beleaguered Geek, Tola Sokoya as Young Republicanette, and Carys Taylor as Stoner Chick.

Why Heathers Still Hits Close to Home

We’ve all been teenagers once. And even if high school looked different back then, many of the feelings that come with those years haven’t really changed.

There’s the pressure to fit in. The fear of being left out. The need to be liked. The worry that somehow, everyone else has figured things out while you’re still trying to find where you belong.

That is perhaps why Heathers continues to resonate decades after the original film was released.

The musical uses dark comedy and satire to tell its story, but underneath the sharp jokes and larger-than-life characters are themes that may feel uncomfortably familiar. Young people today are still dealing with popularity, bullying, peer pressure, rejection, and the desire to be accepted — only now, those pressures don’t always end when the school bell rings. Social media means the need to fit in can follow them even after they get home.

For parents of teens, Heathers could open the door to conversations about what their children are experiencing at school and with their peers. Sometimes, asking, “How was school?” isn’t enough to get a real answer. But watching a story together can give parents and teens a starting point to talk about the things that may otherwise be difficult to bring up.

Of course, parents should also know that Heathers deals with mature and dark subject matter, so it’s worth checking whether the show’s themes are appropriate for their teen and having those conversations before or after watching.

Because sometimes, a story can help us say the things we don’t quite know how to say ourselves.

And sometimes, seeing a character struggle with the same fears — wanting to fit in, wanting to be seen, wanting to matter — can remind a young person that they aren’t alone.

Heathers the Musical opens on January 21, 2027, and runs until February 7, 2027, at The Theatre at Solaire. Pre-sale tickets will be available from September 8 to 11 for UnionBank subscribers, while public ticket sales begin on September 13 via Ticketworld.
