Celebrate Global Handwashing Day

Global Handwashing Day is a reminder that handwashing for kids (and grownups!) takes 20 seconds, soap, and a little patience

Today is Global Handwashing Day, a good reminder that one of the kindest things you can do for your child takes about 20 seconds. Handwashing for kids with soap and water is a simple, affordable way to guard against diarrhea, respiratory infections, and other preventable illnesses.

What Soap and Water Do for Your Child

Soap lifts germs, dirt, and chemicals off little hands before they travel to mouths, toys, and the people you love. The CDC estimates that proper handwashing can prevent about 1 in 3 diarrheal illnesses and 1 in 5 respiratory infections.

Why the Stakes are Higher in the Philippines

A 2024 study by the Philippine Institute for Development Studies and UNICEF Philippines linked poor water, sanitation, and hygiene to 86% of the country’s diarrhea-related deaths in 2019. Children under 5 accounted for 35% of those deaths.

Access is uneven, too. About 94% of Filipino households have handwashing facilities, but nearly half of households in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao have limited or none. That gap is why the habit matters so much at home and in school.

Handwashing for Toddlers: Start Early

Your toddler may not understand germs yet, but they can learn that clean hands help them stay well. The five steps are wet, lather, scrub, rinse, and dry.

  • Wash together. Little ones copy what they see, so let them watch you.
  • Sing for 20 seconds. A short song, even a silly made-up one, keeps small hands scrubbing long enough.
  • Cover the missed spots. Gently guide them to the backs of their hands, between the fingers, around the thumbs, and under the nails.
  • Build a routine. Wash before meals and after bathroom trips, outdoor play, touching pets, coughing, sneezing, or wiping a nose.
  • Cheer them on. A bright “Nice clean hands!” makes it feel like a win, not a chore.

Make Handwashing Easy at Home

A sturdy step stool, mild soap, and a towel within reach help toddlers wash on their own. Gentle, repeated reminders work better than expecting perfection.

If you can’t get to soap and water, use a hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol, then wash with soap and water as soon as you can.

Twenty seconds, soap, water, and a little patience. Those small daily moments help build healthier habits for Filipino families.
