A Minecraft Movie: A Movie Filled With Childlike Creativity and Laughs

Ever wonder why our kids love Minecraft so much? A Minecraft Movie will definitely help explain that!

All our kids have been on the edge of their seats, waiting for A Minecraft Movie to finally be in theaters. Thankfully, the wait is over with the movie is now showing in cinemas starting this April 2! Although we’ve seen the trailers, every parent’s probably wondering: should I let my kids watch considering I just cut their screen time? Plus, with many video games being adapted to the silver screen, what makes this one any different?

So, here’s what we think about A Minecraft Movie!

Lore-accurate with a Twist

Let’s be honest: nothing annoys a fan more than a movie that doesn’t study the details of the franchise while claiming to be an adaptation of it. However, A Minecraft Movie has outdone itself in that sense. Not only does it stay true to the mechanics of the game, it also adds a few twists while following it. The kids at heart and the kids may not remember a “tater gun” being craftable as a weapon in-game but, the crafting table’s mechanic was demonstrated perfectly. From the materials needed to the position of the materials on the grid, it was explained easily for even non-players like most of us to understand that specific feature.

Although some of the kids may wonder where the game’s final boss, the Ender Dragon, went, the other creatures were both fearsome and comedic. Taming a wolf with a bone, learning the hard way to not fight a Creeper up close, and the attack of the Zombies, Skeletons, and Piglins had everyone laughing especially since the dynamics between Jack Black and Jason Momoa as a veteran player and newbie respectively shed light on how the gaming community is.

But what may be shocking to the most is hearing a Minecraft villager speak English. That may not be part of the game’s lore but it was a welcome twist, nonetheless!

Filled with internet-based humor

While it can be a family movie, parents may find it a bit hard to keep up with the dialogue unless they’re familiar with internet and gaming humor. But it’s still hilarious, nonetheless. Sometimes, nothing can be funnier than watching two grown men trying to figure out a children’s game with one failing miserably and the other doing everything they can to bail the other one out of the situation.

But underneath the humor, A Minecraft Movie addresses the struggles that many creative individuals suffer: suppressing one’s creativity in fear of shame. Minecraft would then be a godsend as an escape and outlet, constantly reassuring them that their creativity is accepted in that world. Because, we parents are the ones who quash our kids’ creativity and innovativeness under the guise of protecting our kids from embarassment and exclusion — something that Henry’s older sister, Natalie, does, they withdraw from us. Something Henry does.

Sometimes, it takes a bit of immersion to understand. By watching Steve (played by Jack Black) bond with Henry, Natalie has an overview of how her brother would be in the future if she doesn’t support her brother for who he is: someone who finds comfort in a world away from hers.

Immersion into our kids’ world

A Minecraft Movie is a movie that’s best enjoyed by not thinking. Don’t think too hard about the rules and laws — that’s the simple premise that most kids use to fuel their creativity. Put it together, see what happens. The sky’s the limit when it comes to childlike imagination!

Besides, as parents, we did experience with the thrill of creativity before. It’s called LEGO.

So, should the kids watch A Minecraft Movie? Yes, we think they should. They’ll definitely enjoy it!
