Aaron Carter, the brother of Nick Carter, died on Saturday, November 5, at the age of 34. He leaves behind an 11-month-old son.
Aaron Carter, brother of Backstreet Boys member Nick Carter and whose hits include “I Want Candy” and “Aaron’s Party (Come Get)” has died at the age of 34. According to several US media reports, Aaron was found dead at his home in Lancaster, California.
Aaron Carter’s showbiz life
Aaron first rose into the spotlight when his self-titled debut album was released in 1997. He then toured with the Backstreet Boys and Britney Spears and released three albums. Later in 2000, he embarked on a solo tour.
In 2018, he released his fifth album LØVE, which would be his last.
He also did guest appearances in shows such as Lizzie McGuire, 7th Heaven, and Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Moreover, he appeared in movies such as Fat Albert, Supercross, and Popstar.
Aaron had a reality show with his siblings as well, House of Carters, and participated in Dancing with the Stars among other projects.
But behind the success, Aaron’s personal life was spiraling out of control, leading him to a feud with his family.
Aaron’s ups and downs
In 2006, Aaron, who was 18, got engaged to Playboy model Kari Ann Peniche. But six days after, they decided to call it off. Speaking to People at that time, Kari said that Aaron was just too young.
Prior to the airing of the House of Carters, Aaron and Nick Carter had a fistfight. In 2008, their sister Bobbie Jean admitted to People that the family had some tough times.
Aaron also found himself in several controversies including being arrested for speeding, checking into a rehabilitation center, and filing for bankruptcy in 2013.
On top of his many issues, Aaron had a long rift with his brother Nick, and at one point Nick had to file a restraining order to protect his wife Lauren and kids from an alleged threat that Aaron made against them. Another sibling, Angel, also filed a restraining order against him.
In 2017, Aaron revealed that he was bisexual and explained in 2018 the mixed reactions he got. “I keep telling people that. I don’t want it to be misconstrued too much just because I was open about a story,” he said.
Aaron continued to have ups and downs until his death.
What would be a happy family
In January 2020, Aaron went official with his then-girlfriend Melanie Martin. The photo has since been deleted when they broke up but at that time, he wrote of Melanie: “She loves me, she loves me not, she woke me up from napping but I’m not complaining.”
The couple got engaged that year but broke up. They welcomed their son Prince, who is now 11 months old.
After a brief break-up, they reconciled in December 2021. But in February 2022, Aaron announced they broke up again.
“My relationship has come to a point where we have to part ways. Please respect my privacy at this time. Thank you,” Aaron tweeted.
Tributes from celebrities
Several celebrities including Hillary Duff and Dianne Warren sent their condolences to Aaron Carter’s family.
Following the news of his brother’s death, Nick took to social media to remember his brother.
“My heart is broken. Even though my brother and I have had a complicated relationship, my love for him has never ever faded. I have always held on to the hope that he would somehow, someday want to walk a healthy path and eventually find the help that he so desperately needed,” he said.
“Sometimes we want to blame someone or something for a loss, but the truth is that addiction and mental illness are the real villains here. I will miss my brother more than anyone will ever know. I love you, baby brother.”
Angel also posted a tribute to her brother saying: “To my twin…I loved you beyond measure. You will be missed dearly. My funny, sweet Aaron, I have so many memories of you and me, and I promise to cherish them. I know you’re at peace now. I will carry you with me until the day I die and get to see you again.”
Aaron definitely will be missed by those who grew up in the 90s and 2000s.
