Baby First Aid Tips: For More Than Kissing Boo-Boos Away
Here are some baby first aid tips you can use for your newborn!
All parents strive to do everything possible to protect their children but as much as we don’t want to think about it, our little ones are bound to hurt themselves at some stage. Whether it’s a diaper rash or deep cut, it’s always a good idea to be aware of the most common baby injuries and—more importantly— the first aid essentials to treat them with.
Soothing insect bites and rashes
Reduce itching by applying a cold compress or rubbing an ice cube on the bug bite or rash. This can be followed by topical cream like calamine lotion to further soothe the irritation.
Cooling off burns
If a baby suffers burns, immediately hold the burned area under cool running water for up to 10 minutes. After, antibiotic cream can be used to ease healing while small blisters can be covered with a loose bandage.
Compressing bumps and bruises
Keep a reusable ice pack in the freezer in case of bumps and bruises. This ought to swell it down and provide pain relief. Alternatively, you can warm it in a microwave on the occasion you need a hot pack.
Stopping nosebleeds
Seat your baby on your lap and lean them slightly forward. Using a tissue or washcloth, continuously pinch their nostrils closed for five to 10 minutes until the bleeding stops. If caused by trauma, an ice pack against the bridge of the nose goes a long way.
Treating cuts and scrapes
When there is bleeding, hold a cloth over the abrasion for 15 minutes. Disinfect the site with lukewarm water and soap, then pat dry and apply an antibacterial ointment before covering it with a plaster.
Lowering a fever
A baby with hot, flushed skin and is sweating may be experiencing a fever. Remove their excess clothes and check their temperature with a thermometer. Some baby-safe medicine can be given to alleviate the discomfort as well.
Additional First Aid Tip: Reduce Risk
Though you may be primed and ready with the basics, enrolling in first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) classes to learn how to respond quickly during more serious emergencies can make all the difference.
