Mom Fashion: 10 Basic Pieces Moms Need in Their Wardrobes

Because the world is opening up again, here are some basic pieces moms need in their wardrobes.

Whether it’s for outings with other moms or wanting to glam up, no mom wants to dig through an overstuffed wardrobe filled with last year’s fashion! But before we start dumpster diving through our closets and donating some of our old clothes, there are still some basic pieces we should keep. These are some of the fashion pieces that, no matter what happens, will never go out of style.

1. Blazer

For career-oriented moms who work in freezing offices, blazers are a must. They don’t need to be padded. A relaxed one will do. Some moms prefer owning a dark-colored blazer like black or navy blue, so it matches anything and everything. Some celebrity moms even style their blazers by adding chunky jewelry or a plain inner top.

2. White Sneakers

Not only are they comfy, but white sneakers can also match any attire — whether it’s for business or just going out. With the cushioning designed to take a beating in sports, white sneakers can certainly handle our daily schedule with our seemingly endless list of things to do. While it’s easier to match predominantly white ones, some moms like buying ones with pastel accents to add more personality to their looks.

3. A Sleeveless Top

Although commonly known as sportswear, tank tops are the perfect inner top because they always come in different colors, which makes them easy to match with any outfit. Some even come with a sewn-in bra! Since they’re often plain in design, tank tops are usually the go-to for a beach resort or boho look.

4. Maxi Dress

Relaxed and formless, the maxi dress is a must-have basic piece in every mom’s wardrobe because it’s easy to wear and style. It’s a piece that moms can just throw on; no need to think about buttons, zippers, or ribbons. The linen dress, being plain in design, gives moms more freedom to style their look when they try adding cinch belts, statement jewelry, or extra layers like cardigans, shawls, and blazers.

5. A Tote Bag

When moms have to bring everything but the kitchen sink, they need a bag that can hold everything: wallets, keys, a cellphone, tissue, medicine, power banks, and maybe some things that the kids and dad overlooked. With their varied designs, tote bags look stylish while offering a lot of storage space. Some even collaborate with artists to create unique prints for the bags!

6. Long Skirts

Skirts come in all shapes and lengths, but long skirts are easier to style for moms. Different cuts for different struts — long A-line or flared skirts styled with a macrame belt are perfect for casual or garden affairs. Beach or resort vacations mean bringing long printed wrap skirts while the office calls for clean, high-waisted pencil-cut skirts. It’s a bonus if your skirt comes with pockets!

7. Statement Jewelry

Since clothes in a mom’s wardrobe are often simple, the jewelry now becomes the star of the look. Statement jewelry, most especially, work best with basics because of its loud colors and elements that are a treat to the eyes. Paired with a short and fresh summer do, accessories like dangling earrings, ear cuffs, chunky necklaces, thick bangles, and layered necklaces elevate any simple look to something more chic.

8. Button-Up Shirts

Otherwise known as polo shirts, button-up shirts are a basic piece for any mom’s smart casual OOTD. It can go with slacks for a business meeting, jeans for brunch with other mommies, and even a long skirt for those who love Audrey Hepburn’s look from Roman Holiday. Some moms even keep button-up shirts of the same style but in different colors to adapt to the holidays. Look at the late Princess Diana and Princess Catherine of Wales — they sure know how to work those button-up shirts.

9. Slip-Ons

Feet can get claustrophobic, too, especially after wearing heels all day. Slip-ons like ballet flats, slippers, and sandals are the footwear moms use to go everywhere and anywhere. The supermarket, the family’s most frequented mall, and their favorite restaurants — it’s refreshing not to wear socks sometimes. Let some air in to keep the spider veins away.

10. Plain T-Shirts

Plain tees go with anything and everything. They can be fancy when paired with a blazer, designer bag, and heels, and they can be low-key when worn with jeans and a pair of beat-up sneakers. An oversized plain t-shirt creates a relaxed look that’s perfect for shopping in bazaars and street markets to get that bargain buy.

Basic pieces will always be timeless!

When trying to declutter and transform a wardrobe into a capsule closet, always identify and keep the basic pieces. These are pieces in a momma’s wardrobe that never go out of style; they blend with new jewelry pieces, adapt to any weather, and make it easier to twin and match with the rest of the family!
