New Cells at Work Live-Action Film Incoming: What We Know So Far

A beloved anime known as Cells at Work is coming out with a live-action film and has been often lauded for making anatomy fun for kids and younger generations to learn!

Science wasn’t always everyone’s favorite subject unless we were Sheldon Cooper from Big Bang Theory. Or, we made a song out of it like Miley Cyrus in the Hannah Montana episode “Get Down, Study-udy-udy,” especially with all the terms to memorize. So, what’s a parent to do when they’re trying to spark that interest in their kids? Use a cartoon of course! But for those who aren’t fond of letting their kids watch anime, Cells at Work is coming out with a live-action film!

The live-action film’s trailer was recently posted on Warner Bros. Japan’s YouTube channel, revealing who the stars and the directors are.

Encouraging love for our bodies by giving cells personalities!

Most of us get bored by science and the like because of the lack of personality. They don’t do much; a lot of times, it’s just getting from point A to point B. There’s no drama like the usual K-Dramas, C-Dramas, telenovelas, and Netflix to give us our daily dose of emotions.

However, that’s what the writer, Akane Shimizu, did. By writing personalities into the cells in our body like platelets, red blood cells, white blood cells, and even natural killer cells, she gives us and our kids a better understanding of our bodies. Originally a manga, Cells at Work sold so well that it came out as an anime with 2 seasons: Season 1 has 13 episodes and 1 OVA (original video animation or their version of a “spin-off”) and Season 2 has 8 episodes.

It also came out with another spin-off — Cells at Work: Code Black — which depicts how a body responds when it’s not well cared for.

And for new parents, there’s Cells at Work! Baby — a manga written and illustrated by Yasuhiro Fukuda — that shows what happens in a baby’s body.

According to the studio, one of the directors transforming Cells at Work into a live-action film is Takahito Ouchi — the director of the live-action Rurouni Kenshin and a recent addition to Netflix, Yu Yu Hakusho, or what Filipinos popularly know as Ghost Fighter.

Learning human anatomy the fun way with the live-action film, Cells at Work!

Many of us growing up probably remember The Magic School Bus with Ms. Frizzle or The Knowledge Channel but with those airing on more specific channels, Cells at Work! has become the more popular one among kids and young adults.

But like most anime, there are some exaggerated parts which is why kids and teens love watching it. For sure, it’s a lot more fun than listening to someone lecture about how one blood cell carries oxygen to every part of the body. And for kids and teens who are aspiring to be doctors, this is where the fun starts!

Although for sure the film will come out in Japanese, there are usually English subtitles that come with it. The release date, although stated to be December 2024, remains vague on whether or not that’s for international release or only within Japan. Either way, we know our kids are excited to see it!
