How Filipino Families Can Celebrate Independence Day
As the Philippines’ Independence Day is around the corner, here are some ways families can celebrate it.
Like all holidays, the Philippines’ Independence Day allows Filipino families to go on a break and spend time with each other. There’s that little moment of freedom away from the hustle and bustle of corporate life and school to allow working parents and students to breathe. Yet, many have forgotten how significant the Philippines’ Independence Day is. And to make sure kids and future generations don’t forget, here are ways Filipino families can celebrate Independence Day.

1. Visit the National Museum
A visit to the National Museum can be a whole day affair with the different sections offering all sorts of knowledge, especially regarding some hidden easter eggs about the Philippines’ Independence Day. The best part is, entry to the National Museum is free. After that, you can take a short walk around Luneta Park, assuming that it’s not raining of course!

2. Venture through Intramuros
The LGU of Intramuros works hard to maintain the old structures and beauty of the walled city, with many buildings being hundreds of years old. Besides the old churches and cathedrals, there are other spots like Fort Santiago and its museums to explore.

3. Cook Filipino hawker food at home
What is Filipino culture without food? Kwek-kwek, isaw, chicken skin, fish balls, and squid balls — all these are the daily fare of the average Filipino commuter. While there is some fun trying out the street food in UP Diliman, those who struggle to make the trip can buy some of these goodies in the local grocery store.

4. Pay a visit to Kawit, Cavite
For those in the mood for an out-of-town trip, Kawit, Cavite is now an option! Cavitex makes the trip back and forth easier so long as you have an EasyTrip account. Kawit, Cavite is where the Philippines’ Independence Day was declared and if the odds and the weather are in your favor, then maybe the family can pay a visit to the house where Emilio Aguinaldo declared it.
5. Keep up to date with the latest names in the Philippine Art and Fashion industry
As an independent country, the Philippines has developed its own art and fashion. Our claim to the internationally acclaimed Modern Filipiniana movement has every right to be celebrated on its home ground as MEGA magazine celebrates its annual gathering and debut of some of the newest and classic names in the Philippine creative industry.
Sometimes we take the freedom we have for granted.
Filipino families need to remember that the Philippines’ Independence Day holds more importance than a special non-working holiday. It’s the day that the Philippines became its own country; it became a country run by Filipinos for Filipinos. As we celebrate it on June 12, 2023, remember that this is the day that Filipinos started developing a sense of pinoy pride!
