Jennifer Lawrence Talks About Motherhood and Miscarriage
In one of her full interviews since becoming a mother early this year, Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence talks about being a mom, the miscarriages she went through, and reproductive health issues.
Jennifer Lawrence is back with a new movie, Causeway, after taking a break to settle into her life as a wife to an art gallerist, Cooke Maroney, and becoming a mother in early February to son Cy. She spoke with Vogue for its October issue about her life as a mother, the miscarriages she went through, and why the Roe vs. Wade decision that was overturned in June by the Supreme Court was personal for her.
Jennifer Lawrence on being a mom
In the interview, the Silver Linings Playbook actress admitted motherhood can be scary. “It’s so scary to talk about motherhood. Only because it’s so different for everybody. If I say, ‘It was amazing from the start,’ some people will think, ‘It wasn’t amazing for me at first,’ and feel bad. Fortunately, I have so many girlfriends who were honest. Who were like, ‘It’s scary.’ You might not connect right away. You might not fall in love right away,” she said.
“So I felt so prepared to be forgiving. I remember walking with one of my best friends at, like, nine months, and being like, ‘Everyone keeps saying that I will love my baby more than my cat. But that’s not true. Maybe I’ll love him as much as my cat?’”
Jennifer eventually learned to love being a mom to her son. “The morning after I gave birth, I felt like my whole life had started over. Like, Now is day one of my life. I just stared. I was just so in love. I also fell in love with all babies everywhere. Newborns are just so amazing. They’re these pink, swollen, fragile little survivors. Now I love all babies. Now I hear a baby crying in a restaurant and I’m like, Awwww, preciousssss.”
Jennifer Lawrence on Roe vs. Wade and reproductive health
Moreover, Jennifer spoke about the political issues among her family members, particularly on the issue of Roe vs. Wade, which was overturned by the US Supreme Court in June. At that time, she had just given birth and was working on healing her relationship with some of her family members, including her dad.
“I’ve tried to get over it and I really can’t. I can’t. I’m sorry I’m just unleashing, but I can’t fuck with people who aren’t political anymore. You live in the United States of America. You have to be political. It’s too dire. Politics are killing people,” she said.
“I don’t want to disparage my family, but I know that a lot of people are in a similar position with their families. How could you raise a daughter from birth and believe that she doesn’t deserve equality? How?”
Jennifer Lawrence on going through miscarriages
The Don’t Look Up and X-Men star also spoke about the time she suffered several miscarriages and contemplated abortion in her 20s. She said she had a miscarriage in Montreal and suffered another one while doing a film. She even had to undergo a D and C procedure. Hence, the issue of Roe vs. Wade for her was very personal.
“I remember a million times thinking about it while I was pregnant. Thinking about the things that were happening to my body. And I had a great pregnancy. I had a very fortunate pregnancy. But every single second of my life was different. And it would occur to me sometimes: What if I was forced to do this?” she said.
She also didn’t hold back her thoughts about the mixed values parents have when it comes to having family and access to guns.
“I’m raising a little boy who is going to go to school one day. Guns are the number-one cause of death for children in the United States. And people are still voting for politicians who receive money from the NRA. It blows my mind. I mean if Sandy Hook didn’t change anything? We as a nation just went, Okay! We are allowing our children to lay down their lives for our right to a second amendment that was written over 200 years ago.”
