John Prats And Isabel Oli On Serving Food At Home

John Prats and Isabel Oli share what’s cooking at home like at the Prats’ residence

John Prats and Isabel Oli have busy schedules with tapings, directing, and attending to their kids Feather, Freedom, and Forest. But if there is one thing the couple ensures is that food at their home is something the whole family will love.

The couple shared their thoughts during an interview at the sideline of the first episode of Modern Parenting Kitchen.

Must have food at the Prats residence

With three kids and different palates, how has it been in their household? John admits it’s a challenge.

“It’s hard because they have different palates,” the actor and director said. ” But we teach them. I grew up like my mom and my dad and whatever is on the table, you shouldn’t be picky. You have to appreciate what you have.”

So what is the must-have food on the dinner table? “Chicken and fish,” John answered. “Any luto of chicken and fish.”

“And broccoli, paborito nilang tatlo iyon,” Isabel chimed in.

When they were newlyweds, was there anything John ever asked Isabel to cook? He mentioned sinigang but Isabel said he was never the type of husband to ask.

“He did tell me to learn how to cook sinigang because that’s my go-to,” she said.

Planning food in the Prats family

John grew up with food as his mom’s family is from Pampanga. So what is it like when the conversation in their family is about food? It’s a long talk he said.

“They love cooking – my lola and my mom,” he said. “My mom’s side they love to cook.”

“Can I just share? The first time I visited their house, I was like wow! It was special,” Isabelle shared. ” Ang special ko naman – ang daming niluto!”

According to the couple, there were about four or five dishes on the table that day with John explaining: “Ayaw ng mom ko na dalawa lang na putahe.”

And another thing Isabel learned that day? The dish must be different from lunch so there’s no repeat of the food in the evening.

“Grabe yung cooking. So if there are long weekends and holidays, it’s already planned,” Isabel said.

Feeding the kids during school

School opening is just weeks away and meal planning is part of John and Isabel’s agenda. With her kids now going school, what have been the challenges for Isabel?

“The first week of the beginning of school, that’s the challenge,” Isabel said. “Because you have to adjust again. But now, we have a system.”

Isabel cited her daughter Feather’s case. ” She knows the food or snacks she wants. So I don’t have to think.”

She would wake up early to prepare their food saying “it has to be fresh.”

Though her kids see junk food, Isabel said they’re only allowed biscuits. As for other foods, Isabel said the kids love Japanese.

“Sometimes there’s tempura. They love Japanese food. It’s hard to do but they love it.”

Feeding the kids may be a challenge for John and Isabel Oli-Prats sometimes. But one thing’s for sure, food will always keep them together with fun and laughter along the way.
