Marian Rivera Runs For Her Life In New Balota Trailer

The Cinemalaya entry, Balota, directed by Kip Oebanda also gives a peek into election scenarios in the Philippines

A new trailer for the much talked about Cinemalaya entry Balota was released on Monday, July 22. It gave us more ideas on what to expect from the film.

In the trailer, we see the community having a party with two members of the LGBTQIA+ community battling it out. But as the party continues, we see Emmy (Marian Rivera) running among the fields with a yellow ballot box in tow.

Emmy also tries to fight the goons after her and the ballot box and a protest turns violent.

The importance of the trailer for today’s generation

The previous trailer showed what a teacher called the second parent of children would do to protect what’s right. The new trailer gives today’s generation of voters a peek into the problem of previous elections in the country. Before the automation of the elections, voters troop to the election precincts and do manual voting where they put it in yellow ballot boxes.

But more than voting for new leaders, elections in the country have always been troublesome. Some teachers sacrifice their lives to protect the votes from officials who want to stay in power even if they lose the elections.

May the film, inspired by stories of the 2007 elections give the new generation of voters an open eye when they troop to precincts in May 2025 to elect their respective leaders in the national and local government.

Balota premieres as one of the entries in Cinemalaya starting August 2 in selected Ayala cinemas.
