Marvel Teases New Thunderbolts* Movie: Here’s What We Know
As one of the household names that produces superhero movies for our kids, here’s what we know about Marvel Studio’s new movie: Thunderbolts*.
Reportedly coming out in May 2025, Marvel released a trailer revealing a new and upcoming movie Thunderbolts*. Mixing familiar and new faces, the studio creates a team of reformed supervillains similar to DC’s Suicide Squad. While we’re expecting a probably more kid-friendly version of the latter, here’s what we know so far.
Bringing back the familiar faces
Like most Marvel movies, families may need to familiarize themselves with two series and one movie: Hawkeye (starring Jeremy Renner), the Falcon and the Winter Soldier (starring Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan), and Black Widow (starring Scarlett Johanson) to fully appreciate Thunderbolts. It doesn’t mean binge-watching the whole series and the movie in one sitting; maybe just the premise will do.
Thunderbolts will be bringing some familiar faces back like Florence Pugh who plays Yelena and has taken the name of her predecessor, Black Widow, Sebastian Stan who plays Bucky or the former Winter Soldier, and Wyatt Russell who plays the U.S. Agent or the alleged replacement of Captain America. Based on the trailer, the reformed supervillains are brought back together, bonding over their redemption arcs and their sudden thrust back into the espionage world.
Superhero movies are now more morally complex
The Thunderbolts* trailer reveals the new trend of superhero movies, “We were brought up with this belief that there were good guys and there were bad guys. But you eventually realize that, there are bad guys and there are worse guys.”
For many years, it was simple as to who’s bad and who’s good. But we’ve seen the trend of superhero movies and tell families a reality that many are not always ready to face — not everything is black and white. Every situation, especially on a national level, is morally complex. Nobody goes home completely happy. We choose and sacrifice without realizing it and even villains deserve a redemption arc, should they want it.
While the Thunderbolts* trailer announces the tentative release date to be May 2025, it may differ across different countries.
