Mattel Anticipates 2025 With The Lunar New Year Barbie™

As the year 2024 comes to an end, Mattel jumps 2025 with the Lunar New Year Barbie™.

Dear parents, toy collectors, and fashion designers in need of fashion inspiration, look no further as Mattel releases its new Lunar New Year Barbie. With Chinese New Year slated on January 29, 2025, to usher in the Year of the Wooden Snake, the new Barbie design comes in traditional red but in a modern take on a qipao — a Qing Dynasty classic — which often symbolized empowerment and beauty.

The Rise of Barbie™ Among Kids

After the Barbie™ movie was released in 2023, many parents didn’t see the dolls as a phase anymore. Back in the day, only daughters got to play with Barbie™ dolls. They would serve as an introduction to our girls on what they could be or what they could wear. While there were daily-life Barbies, the franchise eventually branched out into sets and even more premium designs like the Filipina Barbie™ and more.

Oftentimes, Barbie™ has also been a double-edged sword. While it allowed little girls to play-pretend what they could be, some have weaponized it as a beauty standard. Unfortunately, it’s one of the most common reasons girls abandon their dolls. The fear of bullying and losing a place among their peers is much stronger as they age, especially when sometimes even when girls tease other girls for still playing with dolls.

Thankfully, that has changed. Some girls are more open to liking Barbies™ and the color commonly associated with her: pink. And for the Lunar New Year 2025, she dons a red qipao with the contemporary mermaid hem for the dress while retaining many Chinese elements including the traditional collar and knot that symbolizes good luck.

Welcome the Lunar New Year 2025 with Barbie™

Although we haven’t finished Christmas, Chinese New Year seems to be celebrated a lot earlier. Often celebrated on the first week of February, Chinese New Year changes date depending on the lunar phases.

However, showcasing Barbie™ in various nationalities sends a message to other kids out there that beauty is no longer the traditional blonde and blue eyes that the doll initially had. With her wearing different hairstyles and dresses, our kids learn that there are different ways to appreciate a culture.

As of now, the new Lunar New Year Barbie may not be available on the shelf. But it can be pre-ordered through the website of Mattel.
