Michelle Yeoh’s Family Celebrates in Malaysia
Michelle Yeoh’s family in Malaysia led by her mom Janet and relatives celebrate her win and bring pride to the country.
Michelle Yeoh’s win as the first Asian Actress in a leading role was not just celebrated at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. Thousands of miles in Malaysia, family and friends gathered in Kuala Lumpur to cheer as she went up on stage to take her Oscar.
The 60-year-old actress’ mother Janet Yeoh was emotional as her daughter dedicated her win to her and all the moms for making the ultimate sacrifice. Speaking to Channel News Asia, Janet was clearly overwhelmed by her daughter’s historic moment.
” I told my daughter I love her very much. I miss her,” Janet said. ” You can see how well she fights, you can see it from your own eyes.”
“She’s very good. [She’s a] hardworking girl,” Janet beamed of her daughter.
Auntie Michelle
Michelle’s niece, Vicky Yeoh, also shared how she was proud of her aunt. Despite spending much time abroad, the Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon star makes her family a top priority.
“She is like a mother to us as well because she has no children. But she keeps telling us, ‘you know what, I don’t need anybody because you are my kids,” Vicky explained of their relationship with their aunt.
“She’s always there throughout our journey—through graduation. She’s always there for us. She is the most supportive aunt that you ever had.”
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim also congratulated the actress.
“In creating history by being not just the first Malaysian but the very first Asian actress to win in this category, we take enormous pride in her achievement, adding to a long list of successes and capping a critically acclaimed acting career spanning decades,” he said through a Facebook post

On Sunday night, Michelle said in her speech that winning the coveted Best Actress award symbolizes the dream for many Asians.
This is a beacon of hope and possibilities,” she said, raising the statue. “This is proof—dream big and dreams do come true.”
“And ladies, don’t let anybody tell you that you are ever past your prime. Never give up.”
Michelle’s win alongside the film Everything Everywhere All at Once is the latest achievement for Asians since Bon Joon-ho’s Parasite.
