NCCA Celebrates National Arts Month After Two Years Online
February is National Arts Month in the Philippines. This year’s theme is Ani ng Sining, Bunga ng Galing.
After two years of online activities, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) formally opened this year’s National Arts Month on February 12 with free workshops at Rizal Park. Prior to the event, a formal press conference happened last February 4 with NCCA ambassador and Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray present.
This year, the NCCA’s theme is “Ani ng Sining, Bunga ng Galing.” According to a release, galing refers to “excellence in the arts as both a source of bounty despite challenging times and a product of the passion of Filipino artists and cultural workers.”
Onsite workshops and performances
The celebration kicked off with free workshops on dance, theater, indigenous music, photography, and film taught by various experts.
On Sunday, students and those at Rizal Park were treated to a free show with P-Pop sensation SB19 and Joey Ayala and the Bagong Lumad performing some of their music. SB19, who serve as NCCA Youth ambassadors performed their hits “What,” “WYAT,” and “Nyebe” while Joey and the Bagong Lumad introduced its music to a new generation of Filipino listeners.
Aside from music, the audience was also treated to dance performances and spoken-word poetry.
National Arts Month or Presidential Proclamation No.683 was first promulgated under President Corazon C. Aquino. The celebration aims to promote and celebrate artistic excellence as well as pay tribute to the rich and diverse Filipino heritage and culture.
