This College Came Up with a Creative Way to Attract Students to the Library!

Lyceum Manila’s K-Drama-inspired college library is the talk of the town and became a favorite among the students.

Libraries aren’t every kid’s favorite hobby spot but, Lyceum Manila‘s latest revamp may change that. Inspired by the K-Drama “Start-Up”, the college library (otherwise known as the Sotero H. Laurel Learning Resource Center) has immediately become the favorite spot of many of Lyceum Manila’s students from its shelves forming a rainbow arch to even a colorful palette. It’s a stark contrast to the plain-looking libraries we were used to seeing back in the day.

Reaching out to the heart of the students

“When the place was designed, we wanted to try reaching out more to our students,” shares Special Projects Officer and Communication & Public Affairs of LPU Manila Abby Laurel during the tour of the newly inaugurated library. “We also wanted to expand from the original library because of how we’re constantly adding new resources for the students to use.”

The original library was in the main building, which was merely a single, long hallway with one floor. The new one has multiple levels to house the many memorabilia that plays a big part in Lyceum’s history. This includes the Laureliana section which houses Jose P. Laurel’s items. They’re currently practicing an open shelf system, encouraging students to grab a book in the library’s “courtyard.” The charm of the design even attracted some of the college’s alumni, who have returned to experience the library for themselves.

“It’s a bit envying that the students of today get to experience something like this,” jokes Lyceum Manila’s Marketing Specialist Lesle Guisansana, who is an alumna. “Some of my friends [from college] wanted to come back here, just so they could see. Some are thinking of taking post-graduate studies here just to experience it.”

If only every school library looked like this…

Convincing kids to read a book is like fighting with them to eat their vegetables. With everything easily found online, children these days have yet to experience the joy of hearing that crisp sound as they turn the page of a book. And although the library still has limited public access, it’s currently talked about in the admin meetings to open the place to the public. So they can spread the love for reading to other families as well!
