Nicole Hyala Stands Tall After Thyroid Cancer Diagnosis

Love Radio DJ Nicole Hyala confirms her diagnosis and will undergo treatment in July

The thyroid gland is part of the endocrine system that controls the body’s metabolism. Though small, it plays a vital role in releasing hormones that regulate essential functions, including energy use and mood.

The subject of thyroid health became personal for 90.7 Love Radio DJ Nicole Hyala, who recently announced she has been diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Despite the unexpected news, Nicole took it with calm resolve, determined not to let it defeat her.

Nicole Hyala: “I’ve Been Through Worse”

On Instagram, Nicole shared the diagnosis publicly and with remarkable poise: “ I am calm. But before you panic, ayon sa mga eksperto, thyroid cancer is often called the ‘friendliest’ cancer.  And that’s good, because I’ve already been through worse.”

“I’ve faced battles that broke me, seasons that nearly crushed me. But here I am still standing, still smiling, still kumikinang.  I’ve survived storms that could’ve drowned me, and this is just another wave I know I can ride, with God beside me.”

While this diagnosis wasn’t something she anticipated, Nicole is leaning on her faith to see her through.

“Thyroid cancer. You’re just another name, and I have faith in the One who’s above all names.  So let’s do this, thyroid cancer. You picked the wrong girl. Mali ka ng kinalaban. Wag ako,” she laughed.

Remaining Positive

In an interview with ABS-CBN, Nicole remained upbeat, explaining that she was asymptomatic at the time of her diagnosis. She also revealed that she didn’t shed tears upon learning the news.

“No, I didn’t. Ito ‘yung sinabi ko eh, na parang, I think I’ve been through so much already, na this is another one of those uncharted waters, na katulad nung in the past na napagdaanan ko, na I was able to overcome. So this is just one of those. So parang, nahihiya naman ako kay Lord para matakot pa,” she said.

Her daughter, Princess, who was hospitalized in 2021, was a major source of strength and inspiration.

“Yung kay Princess, when the doctor told me na we’re not sure if she’s gonna live, if she’s gonna be bulag, bingi, pipi-pilay,” Nicole recalled. “So mas mahirap ‘yun as a mother. But we were able to surpass it. If you see her, sinasagot-sagot na ako. That’s a regular 12-year-old girl. So she’s very, very normal.”

Princess also took to Instagram to express support for her mom: “We are okay because mom is okay,” she wrote on June 24, sharing that she recently accompanied Nicole to a doctor’s appointment.

Operation Set for July

Nicole told ABS-CBN she’s scheduled to undergo a full thyroidectomy in July, followed by radioactive iodine therapy. While she’s concerned about resting her voice for a few days, doctors have assured her it will not be permanently affected.

She admits there’s anxiety over possible complications, but her faith remains strong.

“There’s a risk, but it’s 1%. Doon tayo natatakot sa possible risk, ‘di ba? So, but I’m, you know, in the same way that God has always been there for me in all the trials, then maybe this is something that I will also go through. And then, pagtatagumpayan ko ito.

When asked for her message to others facing cancer, Nicole’s answer was firm and full of hope.

“Six years old lang po ‘yung bunso ko. I have so much to do. I have so many people to, you know, still entertain. So I have a long way to go. Pagtatagumpayan ‘yan.
