Parents, Get Ready to Rock! Jem and the Holograms Are Back
The 80s classic Jem and the Holograms is returning with new music from the show
If you were one of the Gen Xers and millennials who watched Saturday morning cartoons, chances are you encountered Jem and the Holograms, a show about glamour, glitter, and fashion, which was the game! The show was one of the programs that mixed music video songs in the 80s.
Four decades on, the people who grew up with the show and are now parents are in for some nostalgia. Hasbro announced that they are releasing a new album of songs from the show. On top of that, the voice behind Jem/Jerrica Benton, Britta Phillips, is on board.

Who are Jem and the Holograms?
Jem and the Holograms is a story of a girl group that became a hit after winning the Battle of the Bands contests. Jerrica Benton and her sister Kimber became orphans after their father’s death and pushed on to run Starlight Music and Starlight House. With the help of Synergy, a computer program created by Jerrica and Kimber’s father, she generates hologram images with Jerrica turning into Jem, who performs together with Kimber, Aja, and Shana. Another member, Raya, later joins the group.
The Holograms are in a rivalry with the Misfits, who always try to upstage them at every event they go to. And what is a show without a romantic interest for Jerrica/Jem in the form of Rio Pacheco? Of course, Rio finds himself between Jerrica and Jem, not knowing it’s the same woman.
The album is coming in July
According to a Billboard report, the 40th-anniversary album will come out on vinyl and digital streaming via Hasbro. The opening theme song was released in May.
Six songs will be part of the album from the 80s series, with Britta singing them as lead. These songs are: “Only The Beginning,” “Truly Outrageous,” “Like A Dream,” “I Got My Eye On You,” and “She’s Got The Power.”
Nostalgic Moments
Phillips said she took voice lessons to prepare for the recording to help her sing confidently.
“To my surprise, the high notes weren’t difficult. We even kept the songs in the original key except for one track where we dropped down a half step – and that one didn’t have the highest notes. The biggest challenge was singing at such fast tempos (the original tempos), but it was very exciting and nostalgic for me, and I had a blast! And working with these amazing and talented producers (all female!) was inspiring,” she said.
She admitted becoming emotional in recording “Only The Beginning,” one of the songs she first voiced in 1985.
“It brought me back to my beginning, and so it felt like a full circle of my life from the very beginning of my musical career to the present.”
Blast Back to the 80s
The remastered songs from Jem and the Holograms are a treat for the parents who grew up in those times watching them. With the new music, it’s something they can listen to over and over again and share with their kids.
More than fashion and music, Jem and the Holograms is a show that shows women can do anything if they put their minds to it. It’s a story of friendship, sisterly love, and inspiring people to reach for their dreams. Get ready to go back to the 80s, but this time with a modern twist.
