When Komiks Become Real: Welcome to the Philippine International Comics Festival 2024!

For us who grew up with comics and for our kids who love reading webtoons and comics online, the Philippine International Comics Festival 2024 debuts its first in-person festival!

We’re always encouraging our kids to read books but, we’ve got to admit — comics fill us with a different sense of joy. While many of us learned what it means to be a hero from comics about Superman, Batman, etc., some got their sense of humor from writers like the witty Pol Medina Jr. So when we heard that the Philippine International Comics Festival will hold its first in-person event this coming July 20-21, 2024, we’re just so hyped!

After all, meeting the people who created the characters that inspired us during our childhood and still inspire our kids today is an opportunity we wouldn’t want to pass up on.

PICOF 2024: Uniting Writers with Readers Through The Love for Filipino Comics

While Japan has manga, China has manhua, and South Korea has manhwa, the Philippines has Komiks!

Komiks always had a special place in our hearts. Besides the art styles having a unique personality to them, a lot of them had stories that were relatable to everyday life. Some of them even got us through life; when times were hard, Komiks were always there to give us a good laugh.

But it takes a different level of discipline and commitment to create these fun pieces of literature. And in the upcoming Philippine International Comics Festival 2024, artists and writers from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao will be gathering to showcase their work. Some will even be holding masterclasses — a must for all of us who want to learn the secrets of becoming amazing storytellers.

However, they’re not just celebrating local artists but also those who made it to the global stage Some of these creatives are even children’s book writers such as Bambi and Roland Amago, the writers of the multi-award winning autobiographical komiks “Doobiedoo Asks”, and J. Philip Ignacio and Alex Niño, who wrote “Alandal.” The books will be available among many others at the PICOF Official Selection.

Some will even be making their debut like “Nino Bughaw” by CJ Reynaldo, about a deaf
weather engkanto who has to save his parents from the evil stormy engkanto, and “Watchdog
Of Manila” by Lucas Lacorte, about a young boy who uses his newfound superpowers to
guard Sentro Manila.

Behind every action-packed comic and hero, is a writer and artist who dreamed

Some of us may have wanted to become comic book artists, inspired by great legends like Marvel’s Stan Lee or DC’s Batman artist Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger. But back in the day, it wasn’t as recognized and a lot of times — we considered it a luxury to even create art for a living!

However, with the first-ever face-to-face Philippine International Comics Festival 2024 organized by Komiket, we’ll not only share a bit of our childhood with our kids. But maybe, revisit our own childhood as well.
