The Smurfs Are Off To Rescue Papa Smurf In Latest Trailer

Gen X and Millennials may have The Smurfs growing up through the cartoon shows and books from their time. After three movies, the blue humanoids are back for a new adventure, with singer Rihanna providing the voice of Smurfette.
In the new film, the Smurfs find themselves in chaos when Papa Smurf (voiced by John Goodman) is kidnapped by the evil wizards Razamel and Gargamel. Smurfette (Rihanna) rallies the Smurfs as they rescue Papa Smurf and travel to the human world, finding themselves in Paris.
As they rescue Papa Smurf, they meet new villains and new allies. The movie also hints at new music from Rihanna and the song “Higher Love” performed by Desi Trill featuring Cardi B, DJ Khaled, Natania, and Subhi.
Timeless characters
The Smurfs first appeared in a Belgian comic book by artist Pierre Culliford under his pen name Peyo in 1958. Its success soon came in the form of merchandise such as figurines, toys, and other collectibles.
The Smurfs gained popularity in the United States when a series was shown in 1981, produced under Hanna-Barbera Productions and became part of Saturday morning cartoons. It later spawned several spin-off television specials.
Two Smurf movies were released in 1965 and 1976 in Europe. In 2011, Sony Pictures announced it was releasing a trilogy on the Smurfs in live action, starting with The Smurfs, Smurfs 2 (2013), and Smurfs: The Lost Village (2017).
A new generation is introduced to the Smurfs
The new Smurf movies gives Gen Z the opportunity to know about the Smurfs thanks to Rihanna and other cast members like James Corden, Sandra Oh, Octavia Spencer, Nick Kroll, Hannah Waddingham, Kurt Russell, and John Goodman. They just have to watch it as to why it’s been a classic for families.
Smurfs opens in the Philippines on July 16.
