Robert Downey Jr. Returns To MCU As Dr. Doom
Marvel Studios revealed many things in store for its MCU franchise including the return of Academy Award winner Robert Downey Jr. this time as Dr Doom!
For the millennials, Gen Z and Gen Alpha who saw the Marvel movies, Robert Downey Jr. was Tony Stark/Iron Man. After bidding goodbye to his role in the franchise, the Academy Award winner returns not as Tony but as Dr. Victor Von Doom or Dr. Doom!
The Russo brothers Joe and Anthony and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige announced RDJ’s return during the Comic Con in San Diego, on Saturday, July 27 when a man in a green suit and a mask of Dr Doom came forward before the panel at Hall H.
“New mask, same task,” the caption read.
“What did I tell ya? I like playing complicated characters,” the Oppenheimer star said during the panel.
The Russo brothers, who are set to direct two more Avenger films – Doomsday and Secret Wars, said there were so many possible things to do with the storyline and decided it was only right to “bring the greatest actor.”
Following the announcement, Downey Jr also shared the photo on his Instagram account.
Mixed reactions but overall excitement
Several fans at the comic con expressed their excitement after RDJ’s revelation. Others took to social media to express disappointment saying that Downey Jr. for them will always be Iron Man.
News of Downey Jr’s possible return to the MCU franchise has been abuzz when he spoke to Esquire early this year.
“Happily. It’s too integral a part of my DNA. That role chose me. And look, I always say, Never, ever bet against Kevin Feige. It is a losing bet. He’s the house. He will always win,” he said at that time.
Feige meanwhile made it clear that the death of Tony Stark/Iron Man in the franchise is something they all will respect.
“We all worked very hard for many years to get to that, and we would never want to magically undo it in any way,” he told Vanity Fair.
Downey Jr. starred as Tony Stark/Iron Man in its first film in 2008, reprising it in 10 more films. Iron Man later launched the MCU franchise, which include stories of Captain America, Thor, Black Widow, Hulk, and the Avengers.
Downey Jr. this year won the Best Supporting Actor for his role in Oppenheimer. He is married to movie producer Susan and they have two kids. He has a son from a previous relationship.
