What Roxanne Guinoo Learned From Getting Married Early
Roxanne Guinoo tells Toni Gonzaga what she had to give up when she married young and her kids.
Many would know Roxanne Guinoo as part of Star Circle Quest alongside Sandara Park, Hero Angeles, and Michelle Madrigal. She did several movies and teleseryes until she announced she was getting married at the peak of her career.
When Roxanne appeared on Toni Gonzaga’s online show, she shared the lessons that showbiz, having kids at a young age, and getting married have taught her.
Getting married at 23
During the conversation, Toni asked if Roxanne had regrets about getting married young.
“Hindi ako nagdalawang isip doon if I should abort or anything. I was willing to face it,” she said in a mix of English and Filipino, referring to her early pregnancy. ” Pero nasa peak na ako nun [career ko] and sanay ako sa pagiging independent, hindi naging madali iyon para sa akin. Pero alam ko may pagkukulang ako.”
The shortcomings she said were about being impulsive on so many decisions. “Natakot ako magtanong sa parents ko. Yung pagpapalaki ng parents ko, never naman sila nagkulang. Doon ko lang narealize na if kinausap ko ang parents ko, maari akong hindi nagmadali.“
When her eldest daughter Reine Eliana arrived, Roxanne shared she sought guidance and prayed for the right path. Reine also taught her to be stronger and that she’ll do anything for the family.
“Nag decide ako to focus yung oras ko sa kanya, yung magkakaroon ako ng feeling na kapag lalaki ang mga anak ko na wala ako sa tabi nila, makakapagdesisyun sila ng tama.”
That decision to focus on her children was also something she and her husband Elton Yap talked about. “Nag-agree kami doon. Nag meet kami ng halfway kasi ayoko na may mamiss ako sa mga formative years nila.“
Temporary away from showbiz
Getting married early also means temporarily saying goodbye to showbiz. But Roxanne said she did not regret the decision.
“Nung time na nag-asawa na kami ni Elton at inamin namin yung mga pagkakamali namin, kinorrect namin,” Roxanne said. “Yung parenting hindi naging madali sa aming dalawa kasi magkaiba kami ng upbringing.”
Now married for 15 years to Elton, what has she learned? The actress pointed out it takes two to tango.
“Laging sinasabi ng daddy ko dapat laging may respeto. Kasi pag walang respeto, mawawala yung pagmamahal at ang tiwala. And at the end of the day, kayo pa din dalawa.”
As for her kids, Roxanne said that it’s important to be aware of what they are into. “Kailangan na inaalam mo yung nararamdaman nila. Kailangan mo din mavalidate ang feelings nila.”
So what is the best thing about being a mom for Roxanne? She pondered and said: “Siguro yung thought lang na anakapagbigay buhay ka tapos nakikita mo na lumalaki sila ng tama.”
Aside from Reine, Roxanne and Elton have two other kids – Sophia and Reily.
