Sarah Ferguson is Diagnosed With Skin Cancer
The Duchess of York fights another battle after going through breast cancer.
Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, has been diagnosed with skin cancer. In a statement sent to People, a representative of the former monarch, aged 64, said: “Following her diagnosis with an early form of breast cancer this summer, Sarah, Duchess of York has now been diagnosed with malignant melanoma.”
The spokesperson also said that one of the moles—discovered by a dermatologist during reconstructive surgery—was removed after it was found to be cancerous.
“The Duchess wants to thank the entire medical team which has supported her, particularly her dermatologist whose vigilance ensured the illness was detected when it was,” the spokesperson added. “She believes her experience underlines the importance of checking the size, shape, color and texture and emergence of new moles that can be a sign of melanoma.”
Sarah confirmed the news of her diagnosis, sharing a photo on Instagram.
“I have been diagnosed with malignant melanoma, a form of skin cancer,” she wrote. “[This is] my second cancer diagnosis within a year after I was diagnosed with breast cancer this summer and underwent a mastectomy and reconstructive surgery. It was thanks to the great vigilance of my dermatologist that the melanoma was detected when it was.”
“I believe my experience underlines the importance of checking the size, shape, colour, and texture and emergence of new moles that can be a sign of melanoma and urge anyone who is reading this to be diligent.”
She is currently recuperating at the MAYRLIFE Clinic in Austria.
Royal medical reports
The Duchess of York’s medical news is the latest among the royals. Catherine, the Princess of Wales was hospitalized due to an abdominal surgery last week. This will keep her away from her royal duties.
King Charles on the other hand is set to undergo an operation for his prostate.
Sarah Ferguson was formerly married to Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, who has since been inactive from royal duties. They have two children—Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, who are both married and with children.
Although no longer part of the royal family since her divorce from Andrew, Sarah has remained close to him and her children. In an interview, she expressed how her two daughters have kept her going, calling them her “cheerleaders.”
“They have been as supportive as can be, as they always are,” she said.
Sarah eventually announced that she beat the Big C in an Instagram post.
