WATCH: Superman Cast Tries Making Filipino Food—And It Was a Lot of Fun
Director James Gunn, David Corenswet, and Rachel Brosnahan gamely made halo-halo and lumpia during their Manila visit in June
In case you missed it, the cast of Superman—led by director James Gunn and stars David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan—touched down in Manila last June to kick off the movie’s world tour.
They may be superheroes on screen, but how do they fare in the kitchen? Between movie promos, the trio took a break and tried their hand at two iconic Filipino dishes, with the help of food content creator and viral sensation Abi Marquez.

Halo-Halo Making
James, Rachel, and David accepted the challenge of making halo-halo, one of the Philippines’ most beloved desserts. A colorful combination of shaved ice, ube, milk, sweet beans, and various fruits, halo-halo is a post-meal favorite for many Filipino families—and surprisingly easy to prepare.
Abi gave a quick demo of how to layer the ingredients, and later let the stars create their versions.
Plenty of friendly banter followed, with James joking that Rachel—who plays Lois Lane—has always been competitive.
“Rachel was a wrestler,” James revealed, prompting laughter from Rachel.
“I was a starter by default,” she added, chuckling.
At one point, James teased David about his colorful creation, saying it looked a little too Christmas-themed.
“I know from experience that some people at this table are not great at taking direction,” James quipped.
David stood by his dessert, insisting it looked “professionally done.” So, who came out on top? According to fans, it looks like Rachel’s halo-halo was the clear winner.
Lumpia Wrapping
After dessert came something savory—lumpia. Abi, dubbed the “Lumpia Queen” online, challenged the three to see who could make the most rolls.
As they got to work, Abi asked if any of them had tried lumpia before. James proudly shared that Guardians of the Galaxy star Dave Bautista once made it for him.
They watched in amazement as Abi demonstrated how to quickly peel the delicate wrappers. Of course, James kept the competition lively.
As the wrapping went on, James joked that it was beginning to be a nightmare.
“I think lumpia-making is not in my future,” he quipped.
Despite Rachel’s lumpia not being perfectly shaped, she came out as the surprise winner once again. Judging by the laughter and teasing, it was a memorable experience for all.
Easy Dishes to Make With Your Kids
While the Superman cast had fun making these Filipino favorites, these dishes are also great for parents looking to bond with their kids in the kitchen. Both halo-halo and lumpia are simple, flexible, and fun, making them ideal for a weekend family activity.
