Rachel Brosnahan: Why Lois Lane Is the Ultimate Modern Partner
Rachel Brosnahan shares how she got interested in playing Lois Lane and why couples can relate to the love between Superman and Lois
She may not fly or shoot lasers from her eyes, but Lois Lane has always been a hero. Feisty, ambitious, and courageous, she’s inspired generations of girls to chase the truth and chase it hard.
In the upcoming Superman film directed by James Gunn, Rachel Brosnahan steps into the shoes (and press pass) of the iconic journalist. Known for her role as Midge Maisel in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Rachel shares what drew her to Lois and how the character speaks to the realities of modern relationships.

Lois Lane’s Evolution as a Journalist
For Rachel, Lois isn’t just a sidekick — she’s a standout. “One of the first questions I asked James before the audition was where she fits into this canon of a character that’s familiar to so many,” she shared during a press conference on June 20.

“I was initially attracted to this character because it feels equally weighted — you have a superhero who has superpowers, and you have this character who is a superhero in her own right. She’s an everyday superhero.”
Rachel believes part of what makes Lois so compelling is her modernity. “We talked about what it would look like today — what it means to show up professionally to an office that looks very different from ten years ago. She’s someone who chases the story to the ends of the earth. She puts work before herself.”
And while Lois often plays the rational one, she’s not immune to life’s curveballs — like falling in love with a superhero who knocks her feet off.
Rachel also emphasized that Lois’s style, space, and expression offer a window into her inner strength, not just her job.
Lois and Superman’s Modern Love Story
At the heart of every Superman story is an equally super love story — one that Rachel believes mirrors real relationships in all their complexity.
“They bring out each other’s humanity,” she shared in an interview with ABS-CBN. “There’s nothing like a deep, true love that can knock you backward off your feet — suddenly rendering you utterly vulnerable and helpless.”

Their relationship isn’t perfect. And that, Rachel says, is what makes it so powerful. “You see them fighting to hold on to the things they know are true to themselves… it feels deeply and profoundly human.”
“They’re not always the most likely couple to end up together, but it just works,” she added.
David Corenswet, who plays Superman, agrees. “If you don’t even risk offending or upsetting your partner, there are some things that will never get said,” he shared, adding that every couple faces disagreement.
What keeps it all together? Trust, says Rachel. “It’s the one thing that no one can logic their way around.”
Superman opens in Philippine cinemas on July 9.
