Pokwang and Ruby Ruiz Honor Filipino Moviegoers with Their Cinemalaya Wins

Ruby Ruiz and Pokwang shared the Best Actress award at the 22nd Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival, dedicating their trophies to the Filipino people

For those who followed this year’s festival, two films stood out among audiences: 2 Valid IDs and Status: Rejected. Both drew strong crowds, with screenings selling out even as heavy rains poured across Metro Manila.

It was fitting, then, that their lead actresses—Marietta “Pokwang” Subong, who played Sylvia Ramos in 2 Valid IDs, and Ruby Ruiz, who portrayed Biring in Status: Rejected—were named Best Actress during the festival’s closing ceremonies at Shangri-La Plaza on Monday, August 17.

But beyond the recognition, it was the actresses acceptance speeches that made the moment even more meaningful. Both spoke about the Filipino audience and dedicated their awards to people who continue to persevere despite difficult circumstances.

Para sa mga Sylvia at moviegoers

During her speech, Pokwang thanked the people behind 2 Valid IDs, as well as the moviegoers who braved the rain to watch the film.

“Alam ko mahirap ang buhay ngayon. Tipid-tipid…pero nandiyan kayo para sumuporta. Pinatunayan ‘nyo na kaya ng Pilipino. Kaya ng Pilipino ibangon ang industriya,” the actress said.

She also dedicated the recognition to all the “Sylvias”—people who, like her character, are willing to do everything they can for the people they love.

“Sa lahat ng mga Sylvia, sa lahat ng mga Pilipino sa mga pinagdadanasan po, huwag po kayo mawalan ng pag-asa. Laban lang!”

The message echoed the heart of 2 Valid IDs, which follows Sylvia as she travels to Manila to claim money sent for her husband Ramon’s medical treatment. With no valid ID of her own, she is forced to navigate long lines, complicated requirements, and a system that pushes her to her limits.

From “Rejected” to accepted

For Ruby Ruiz, the irony was not lost. After playing a woman who repeatedly faces rejection while applying for a US visa in Status: Rejected, she found herself accepting one of the festival’s biggest honors.

Ruby said she did not prepare a speech because she knew Cinemalaya was full of surprises. She also reminded fellow artists to value the Balanghai trophy because it represents hard work and recognition that cannot simply be bought.

Thanking Cinemalaya for the recognition she has received through the years, Ruby also expressed gratitude to the Status: Rejected team for taking a chance on her.

Like Pokwang, she thanked the people who went to the cinemas to support their film, particularly the students who watched it. She also dedicated the award to her son, who was present at the ceremony, jokingly telling him, “Sana nakinig ka.”

The stories behind the performances

In 2 Valid IDs, Pokwang plays Sylvia Ramos, who needs to secure two valid IDs to claim money sent by a relative for her husband Ramon’s medical treatment. What begins as a seemingly simple requirement becomes a difficult journey through bureaucracy, financial hardship, and desperation.

The film also explores a reality familiar to many Filipino families: how illness can quickly become a financial and emotional burden, particularly for those who already have very little.

Meanwhile, Status: Rejected follows Biring, played by Ruby Ruiz, as she repeatedly applies for a US visa and grapples with the exhaustion and disappointment of rejection.

Through a friend, Biring discovers the world of online connectivity and meets Steve, a stranger who makes her feel seen and special. As her relationship with him develops, the film explores loneliness, attention and the increasingly blurred line between what is real and what exists only on a screen.

Both performances resonated with audiences because, beneath their very different stories, the films reflect experiences many Filipinos know well: money struggles, seeking opportunities, caring for loved ones, and holding on to hope even when circumstances make it difficult.

For Pokwang and Ruby Ruiz, their shared Best Actress win was therefore more than a personal achievement. Their speeches turned the spotlight back to the people who watched, supported, and found pieces of their own lives in these stories—reminding us why Filipino independent cinema continues to matter.
