Black Panther: Wakanda Forever — To Watch Or Not with the Family?
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever reveals the power of grief.
Wakanda Forever picks up where they left off—showing the aftermath of Wakanda when they’ve lost their king. From the queen resuming her rule to how the different people T’Challa interacted with handled his death, it was a movie of grief, transition, and acceptance. Wakanda Forever also had a lot of easter eggs—especially if you’ve been following the earlier Black Panther movies.
The women of Wakanda carry on
Integrating the late Chadwick Boseman’s death into the movie revealed the many facets of the strong women of Wakanda. Queen Ramada, mother to T’Challa, resumed her rule but also had to deal with the many consequences of the late King T’Challa’s choices. Besides the increase in demand and obvious signs of greed for vibranium, she and her daughter, Princess Shuri, had to deal with another villain born from T’Challa’s decision: the submariner Namor.
But what happens when grief plunges morality into the depths?
Wakana Forever sheds light on how the void left behind by grief can be filled with anything, even revenge. Although the lack of actual duels and action expected from a superhero movie made by Marvel might be disappointing to some, the dialogues and reactions from those still grieving from the loss of the Black Panther and from a leader whose grief turned into hatred may need a little bit of extra reading in-between the lines. Something that light movie-goers or those expecting a lot of explosions and combat might not appreciate.
The reality of grief and its consequences
While grief is very much real, so are the consequences of acting upon it. All the more it is emphasized when two powerful, well-armed, and highly developed nations are involved. The plot of Wakanda Forever aged along with its audience to tackle more abstract concepts. It offers an experience unlike the Marvel movies from Phase 1 which was more linear: big ugly alien, defeat him, and then go.
However, it’s always been a common theme in the Black Panther movies that there is something spiritual and philosophical to follow. Wakanda Forever is no exception.
May the Black Panther allow Wakanda to stand forever
Another common theme is that many nations believed that the death of King T’Challa meant that Wakanda lost its power. But the world nations’ efforts revealed in Wakanda Forever is that the grief over the death of their king did more than what they believed. It’s definitely a good watch for those invested in the Marvel franchise but a hard one for those who didn’t watch the previous movies.
