How Moms Can Add Polka Dots for Their New Year’s Outfit

From one minimalist to another, here’s how to add polka dots for their New Year Outfit.

Being maximalist or minimalist draws certain lines on things. Minimalists like simple and practical designs; the less audacious the look, the better. Sometimes, it’s the cut. Other times, it’s the color and pattern. And unfortunately, with Filipinos believing in the superstition of wearing polka dots on New Year’s Eve, it can be a hassle for us moms who have to scour malls to find new clothes because we are anti-pattern.

But not to worry, here are ways to add more polka dots to your New Year’s Outfit without breaking the bank and creating clutter in the closet!

1. The smaller the polka dots, the better.

New Year’s Eve showcases polka dots in both big and small sizes on printed pieces. While the maximalist moms would style themselves with polka dots as big as dinner plates, minimalist moms can go for the smaller ones that look almost similar to glitter. To further keep the clutter to a minimum, choose a neutral color like black or white so it can match with anything from jeans to black slacks.

2. Polka-Dotted Accessories

If the closet is already bursting with clothes then, accessories might be a better choice. Scarves, headbands, bowties, neckties, and even hairpins — all these accessories can sport cute polka dots for New Year! Some even have clay polymer earrings with a polka dot design on them. With polka dot accessories being a lot cheaper and easier to keep, it won’t hurt us too much if we accidentally lose them or they break after repeated use.

3. Polka Dot Dress

Even Princess of Wales Catherine Middleton loves a polka dot dress or two! The New Year pattern does add a bit more playfulness to a classy look. Especially when worn as a midi-length dress (or a dress with a hem right below the knees to the calves), the pattern adds a little shine alongside some sparkling studs or dangling earrings if we have any.

4. The Minnie Mouse Bow

The ultimate fashion hack is looking for a cartoon character that already sports the pattern and we already know who that is: Minnie Mouse! Although it’ll feel weird at first to wear a cartoon character’s fashion piece, removing or hiding the Disney tag on it might make it better. The best part is, since her pattern is already red and white, it’s easy to match with black.

5. DIY Shawl/Scarf with Textile Paint

If there’s no ready-to-wear piece, why not make your own scarf, shawl, or headband? With some old fabrics lying around the house, we can cut them up and paint dots on them by using textile paint. When it comes to fashion, the do-it-yourself route and hacks amaze people more because it’s something you’re proud of and it’s your style!

All it takes is some cutting, a bit of backward stitching, a paintbrush some textile paint and you’ll have a stylish scarf for the party!

6. Sequins or Pearls

If there are no polka dots for the new year outfits, go for exactly they represent: jewelry or shiny beads!

With a plain piece, sew on sequins or pearls of a contrasting color and you’ll immediately have shiny polka dots! Although most sequined pieces have them matching the cloth they’re on to add more sheen, adding contrasting color sequins — like a black cloth with white sequins or pearls — can create a playful and shiny piece for the New Year’s family reunion!

Why do we wear polka dots on New Year’s?

The trendy British fashion has more of a superstitious approach here in the Philippines. Filipino families believe that by wearing this particular pattern on New Year, we’re attracting more financial wealth. The circular shape reminds people of coins and by wearing them, we attract more chances of them coming into our lives. The fortunate instances can happen in all sorts of ways: better business, more interest from our investments, and maybe even prices getting cheaper.

And although we’re not sure how true the tradition is, it’s still a playful pattern to play with anyway!
